Grand Knight's Message
The fraternal year for the Knights of Columbus runs from July 1 to June 30 of each year. The end of this month will mark the end of two years that I have been privileged to serve as the Grand Knight of Father Maher Council. I tried as best I could to follow in the footsteps of some very dedicated and accomplished Past Grand Knights. These two years have given me the opportunity to meet and work with many good men and women; not only in Father Maher Council, but throughout the State of Maryland. I know that I am repeating myself now when I say that there are many good men doing many good things in our Order and I am proud and honored that I can boast of belonging to the same group of men.
Although this will be my last "Grand Knight's Message" to you, I don't plan to disappear completely. According to Council tradition I will remain active as a "Trustee" for the next three years. I will also be very involved as the Chairman of the Retention Committee as well as Chairperson for several of our annual activities.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who worked so hard these past two years to keep the Council (and me) on track. It has been my policy to thank individuals by name, but that's not possible in the space provided, and besides, you know who you are, and I am truly grateful to all of you.
Our Grand Knight-elect for next year, Rick Allison, will be an energetic and enthusiastic leader, but like me, he will need your help and your participation. Father Maher Council has accomplished many wonderful things over the 26 years of its existence, but none of them was done by any one Grand Knight or any one member; it was a group effort. I know that I can count on all of you to keep up that support in the future.
In closing I want to take this opportunity to thank my wife, Judy, for her patience and understanding while I spent many hours both home and away working on behalf of the Order. Although she was not in the "lime-light", Judy was invaluable to me in my efforts, and helped me in so many ways that she should be accorded some sort of official status in the Order for her support, but I guess "Past First Lady" will have to do. Actually, I will soon have to start returning the favor; since I have been so busy with the Knights these past two years we have toilets that need fixing, rooms that need painting, a yard that needs work .... Hmm, wait a minute, I wonder if it's too late to run for a third term?
Fraternally,
Gerry Becker, Grand Knight
Insurance News
Social Security is a wonderful thing, and you pay up to $4000 or more a year for it. Some folks pay to FICA than they do in income taxes. But, do you know the amount of benefits you will receive under the law? Or how this benefit can be lost? For example, do you know:
How much your widow and orphans would be entitled to- should you die before your children reach age 16?
How much your widow will receive after your children reach age 16?
How much monthly income you will receive for your retirement after you reach age 62 or age 65?
And do you know that it is possible for these benefits to be reduced or lost under certain circumstances?
Social Security benefits are intended to supply a floor of protection for a plan of family security and financial independence in old age. It is important to understand them and how they tie the rest of your financial assets together.
I would be happy to share my knowledge of this topic with you. Call me for an appointment.

District Deputy Report
by Tin T. Cao, DD#2
As we entering the last month of this Fraternal Year and of my tenure as your district deputy, I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate every one of you for your dedication to the service to our Holy Mother Church, council, family, community and youth. Serving as your District Deputy is indeed a blessing for me because I have the opportunity to get to know many of you. And I am very humble and thankful for your hospitality, friendship, and courtesy. But most of all, I am very thankful for the opportunity to work with you during the past two years.
The state of our district is very strong. Membership has increased steadily and participation from the members in KoC sponsored events is exceptionally strong. I was so proud to serve you and I am looking forward to meeting and working with many of you again in the near future. Under new districting plan, the district's youngest council, Monsignor Thomas Wells council will do to current district 18. This is a good sign that our district has grown. We still have one whole month to go, so I ask you to work even harder to recruit and recruit. I ask that every one who read this article to pick up the phone - call and invite a friend to join or Order. Star Council Award is within reach for many councils in our district.
To the retiring officers from last and this Fraternal Year, I want to express my gratitude for putting up with me. I am sure that you all have caller ID, and you wanted to ignore my calls many times because I called at odd hours asking for reports, degree exemplification information, meetings ... But you did not. Thank you so much for helping me and for being there when I needed you the most. I regret that I did not have enough time to help you more with council business due to my busy personal schedule. Your service to the Order is second to none. There were times, I wished I could do as much as you. You set a good example for me to follow and it is hard just to follow you.
To the incoming officers, I would like to thank you for stepping forward to serve, and I would like to welcome you to new challenges ahead. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our new State Deputy-Elect Richard Sherbert and the entire State team. May God bless you and your family and every thing you do for our Order. I also would like to take this opportunity to introduce our District-Designate Joseph Feakes (FDW, PGK 6793) and his District Warden-Designate Yen V Le (PGK 11769). These two fine gentlemen will bring so much enthusiasm, energy, and fresh ideas to our district. They are brilliant, dedicated to our Order and very knowledgeable with the State and local Council business.
Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our District Warden Kevin Jeffords and his wife Shirley for their assistance, advices, guidance and friendship. I would not be able to do any thing during the past two years without them. It is wonderful to have such great friends.
May God bless you and your family always.

Health For K of C Membership Longevity
by Bill Gulban
Journal of Longevity, Medical Research Reviews, Vol 8, No. 1, Dr. John Hahn, D.P.M.,N.D
This is your Council Lecturer again to continue my series of articles since the April newsletter to improve our member's lives by writing on the subject of longevity. As stated previously if our membership does not maintain healthy habits of mind and body we shorten our time to carry our work in activities set forth by our founding Father, Fr. Michael McGivney.
In this article #3 I will discuss the 10 best antioxidants and why they are being attacked. In December 2001, the results of a small study at the university of Washington with 160 people attacked the reputation of antioxidants for hearth health. However, in an Associated Press report, top doctors from Harvard School of Public Health and other Universities were quick to urge the consumer not to rush to judgment on the basis of one small study.
So, whom do you believe? To answer that question, a closer look at the 10 top antioxidants - and why - must be considered. In fact, these experts reminds us of the many pro-antioxidant findings from very large, well-controlled, long-term studies with thousands of participants that show a clear benefit from taking antioxidants. But what specifically do antioxidants do, and which are the best?
The 10 best antioxidants and the science behind them are the following:
Proanthocyanidins. Citrus bioflavonoid extract, red wine proanthocyanidins, grape seed extract, and green tea catechin extract are four extremely potent antioxidants holding the first four places on the list. The patented blend help dilate arteries and increase blood flow, which lowers the risk of the type of the type of clots that cut off blood supply and can damage heart muscles. In addition it boosts good cholesterol, protects against cell damage, and cuts the risk for bone loss.
Vitamin E. Protects development of severe heart problems. Evidence through research studies observed arrest in the harmful effects of glucose among those suffering high blood sugar; a reduction in the risk of heart failure; a reduction in the inflammation of blood vessels of the heart; and a reduction in microvascular complications.
Vitamins A and C. Heart protection studies by University of Oxford of people at risk for severe heart problems tested the safety and potential benefits of vitamins E, C, and beta-carotene (a form of vitamin A). The researchers concluded that people taking statin drugs may safely supplement their diet with antioxidant vitamins.
Selenium. Once plentiful in the soil that grows crops of the food Americans eat, selenium is now sadly depleted. As a result, scientists say we have lost the natural protection selenium offers against cell damage in the breast, colon, and prostate gland. Research centers are finding the remarkable advantages of selenium-enhanced foods against cell damage. Currently, a 5-year study of vitamin E and selenium is being conducted with men ages 60 to 90 to determine whether these vitamins offer protection against dementia and memory loss.
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALC). This potent antioxidant is active both in water and fat. This means that ALC offer protection both inside and outside of the cell. ALC may protect DNA from oxidative stress, alleviate damage caused by high blood sugar, protect liver cells, and help rid the body of heavy metals, and regenerate and recycle the body's supply of vitamins E and C.
Zinc. This mineral is present in every cell of the body and over 200 different enzymes. Scientific reports suggest zinc is central to male sex hormone and prostrate gland function. Zinc is thought to help increase the body's natural defense function and cellular growth and repair, and common zinc deficiencies among people aged 50 or older.
This list of antioxidants are carefully chosen and supported by literature in the field of nutritional research. True scientific knowledge is built upon along series of studies that ultimately lead to solid, decisive conclusions. The 10 antioxidants named here result from this kind of extensive, scientific research. All have a place in maintaining your good health.
Note: As always, before beginning any new program you should consult your physician.
First Annual Father Maher Council Member Reunion
by Gerry Becker
If you can only make one meeting a year, this is the one you will want to make. Hopefully, just about every Fr. Maher Council member will be there! The date has been set for Monday, June 10th, 8:00 pm, St. Peter's Parish Hall. We tried to schedule it as close as possible to the longest "daylight" day of the year, the weather should be mild and it doesn't get dark until close to 9:00 pm. There will be ample seating for everyone.
Please mark your calendar now so that this date doesn't get taken up by another activity. It promises to be a great opportunity to renew old friendships and meet some of our newer members. We will conduct a short meeting with refreshments and fellowship to follow. Don't forget, with a large attendance chances are very good that someone will win the $200.00 attendance prize drawing. I hope to see you there!
K of C Supreme Council Eucharistic Congress
by Gerry Becker
Last Spring, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson announced that the Order will host the first-ever Knights of Columbus International Eucharistic Congress at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. on June 22nd & 23rd. A tentative agenda is provided below. Events include Mass, benediction and adoration of the Eucharist, discussions by renowned speakers on the Eucharist and the sacrament of reconciliation. Parking at the Shrine is limited, I strongly recommend using Metro Rail.
What is a Eucharistic Congress? - It is a gathering of the universal Church in particular areas for the purpose of deepening one's understanding of the Holy Eucharist; fostering greater devotion to the Holy Eucharist; and providing an opportunity to proclaim the good News of the Eucharist to the families throughout the Order and the world.
First Friday Devotions
by Chuck Bieberich
Just a reminder that the first Friday of every month is First Friday Devotions night. Come spend a half an hour before our Lord, asking him to bless our families and our Order. Each First Friday, following the 7:15 pm Mass at St. Peter's Church, adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament takes place until 10:00 pm. Father Kalita has extended an invitation to the men of the parish to utilize the last 30 minutes as a "Men's Time of Prayer". The August issue of Columbia magazine announced that the first International Knights of Columbus Eucharistic Congress is scheduled to be held June 22-23, 2002, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D. C. Recognizing the call from Supreme for each council to add some regular program of Eucharistic worship in preparation for this event, it would seem that first Friday adoration is an appropriate response. So join us for 30 minutes of prayer each First Friday, you won't be disappointed.
A note from the Grand Knight - For your information here is the entire schedule for First Friday evenings: Mass begins at 7:15 pm. At the end of Mass the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the Altar, and the priests, Father Kalita, Father LaHood, and Father Giovanoni are available for the sacrament of penance. At 10:00 pm the evening is ended with Benediction. I agree with and support Chuck in his appeal, "come join us". If your parish does not offer First Friday Adoration in the evening, I'm sure you are welcome at St. Peter's, too.
Memorial Day Mass At Gate Of Heaven Cemetery
by Gerry Becker
I read somewhere recently that Memorial Day was originally known as "Decoration Day" because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by "decorating" their graves. It was instituted in 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of civil war soldiers, and has since grown to honor all those who have given their lives in service to their country. On this Memorial Day a stormy rainy night had given way to a beautiful morning and over one thousand area residents turned out to attend the 10:00 am Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The principal celebrant was His Eminence Theodore Cardinal McCarrick. 900 folding chairs had been positioned under a huge tent erected on the parking lot next to the cemetery chapel, over 100 men and women stood for the entire service, no-one seemed to mind. My thanks to the many Council members who assisted in making this such a beautiful event. Activities started very early in the morning with Chuck Cozad taking coffee and donuts to the Color Corps who were on hand for the flag raising ceremony which was held at 8:00 am. Next, Joe Feakes and Homer Chen arrived to direct the huge throng of cars entering and leaving the cemetery. Then John Moore and Jeff Koppi arrived carting 12 folding tables to be used in the chapel to serve lunch to the visiting clergy, cemetery workers, the Color Corps and other K of C volunteers. The Mass itself was attended by Council members and Maryland State Council Representatives Dick & Barbara Sherbert and Bob & Barbara Mazonkey. When Mass ended a full lunch was provided by myself, Bill Gulban, John Moore and Jeff Koppi.
This is an annual activity coordinated by our District Deputy, and is usually very well attended by many visitors from throughout the community.
Recruitment Update For Fraternal Year July 1, 2001 - June 30, 2002
by Gerry Becker
| Original new member goal | ..........22 |
| Members withdrawn or suspended | ..........10 |
| Revised new member goal | ..........32 |
| New members initiated to date | ..........18 |
| Signed form 100's in-hand | .......... 2 |
| Additional new candidates needed | ..........12 |
In order to attain Star Council Status for 2001-2002 we need to bring in 12 new members between now and June 30, 2002. There is one First Degree scheduled between now and the end of the fraternal year, it will be held on June 17th. We have managed to win this prestigious award for every year of our Council's 25 (full) years of existence. If we are to continue this unparalleled accomplishment it will take the effort of every member. It has been proven time and time again, the most effective way to get a man to join the Knights of Columbus is to ASK him.
Comedy Corner
by Gerry Becker
A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided that answer to "Where do pets come from?" Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you anymore. We are lonesome here and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us." And God said, "No Problem!" I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves." And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail. And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal." And God said, "No problem, because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG." And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them. And they were comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail. After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well." And God said, "No problem! I will create for them a companion who will be with them forever and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration." And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve. And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into the Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings. And Adam and Eve learned humility, and they were greatly improved. And God was pleased. And Dog was happy. And Cat didn't care one way or another.
Just In The Nick Of Time
Spring Fund-Raising Raffle
To date about 145 members (32%) have returned their raffle ticket stubs. Please check, and if you have not yet sent yours in, DO SO NOW. If you have misplaced your tickets, please contact the chairman for replacements. The raffle Prizes, ( First Prize - $500; Second Prize - $100; Third Prize - $50) will be drawn at the last meeting of this Council Year on June 24, 2002.
The ultimate success of the raffle will depend on maximum participation. We need the support of every member. We sent every member twelve tickets in hopes that all would participate to that level. We understand that some cannot, therefore we need whatever extra participation other members can contribute. Extra tickets are still available from the Chairman. (Bob Caron 301-774-6951). Several members have already made significant ticket sales. More are needed if we are to have a successful fund raising campaign. All ticket returns must be in before the meeting on June 24, 2002. Ticket stubs can be mailed back in the envelope provided or they can be turned in at any meeting. (Thanks to all those who have responded to date.)
Three Energizing Days At The 104th Annual Maryland State Convention
by Gerry Becker
They were three of the shortest days that I can remember, but they were fun, exciting, and fraternal. The 104th Annual Maryland State Convention was held at Ocean City on May 17-19. In addition to the normal official business that was conducted each day there were lots of opportunities for seeing old friends and acquaintances and for meeting new ones. This year saw quite a few Fr. Maher members in attendance and I'm going to try to list them as best I can from memory; Reverend Father Thomas LaHood, Dick & Barbara Sherbert, Bob & Barbara Mazonkey, Joe & Lynn Feakes, Bob & Janine Caron, Francis & Eydie Robacker, Homer Chen & his friend Helen, Carmine & Irma Amatucci, and Bill & Molly Krumenacker. In addition, several members and Council widows visited us during the Hospitality Room activities; they were Frank Blunda, Joe Fusco, Louise Witt and Margaret Sheehan. The "Surge With Service" programs that we undertook over the last year did not go completely unrewarded.
Your Grand Knight accepted three awards on behalf of the Council Saturday at the annual awards ceremony. First was the "Participation Award" received for conducting activities in all five categories in each quarter and submitting reports on each one of them. Second was the "Church Activities Award, Division A - First Place", this award recognizes our Church Activities as being among the best in the State of Maryland. Third was a "Certificate of Merit" for Council Lecturer Award, Division A - Second Place. That particular contest was entered by our Lecturer, Bill Gulban - congratulations Bill! The weather on Saturday afternoon was threatening so the State Deputy, Romeo Gauthier made the decision to forgo the March to Mass which traditionally halts traffic on the main street in Ocean City.
In spite of the not so great weather, St. Luke's Church was filled to capacity. His Eminence William Cardinal Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore was the main celebrant and gave a memorable homily. The Convention Banquet was held Saturday night. Several dignitaries were in attendance and gave interesting speeches; two that come to mind were the Mayor of Ocean City and the Supreme Representative who came up from Florida to be a part of the convention. Sunday morning saw the election of Officers for the Maryland State Council; these elections are conducted every other year as the term of office is for two years. Dick Sherbert, of our Council, a Past Grand Knight and Former District Deputy was unanimously elected to the highest office of the State chairs, - State Deputy. Congratulations Dick! The other three current officers all moved up to the next office in order unopposed. For the office of State Warden there were three nominees; Peter Davio running for the third time, and Jim Roark and Glenn Wilmer both running for the first time. Peter Davio was elected on the first ballot by an overwhelming majority.
After the official closing of the convention a reception luncheon was held in the hotel atrium to celebrate the election of our State Officers. Father Maher Council hosted this very well attended luncheon. It was a very busy, but well organized and enjoyable three days of fraternalism. You might want to consider reserving this same weekend on your calendar for next year.
Congratulations!!!
From the Grand Knight
Congratulations to two members of Father Maher Council, Christopher Argauer and Jeff Koppi, who received the honors of the Third Degree on Friday, May 24th.
