Grand Knight's Message
Brother Knights, by now most of you know I have a fairly informal style of leadership. I believe our council and the activities are driven by the members. We have several items to begin working on over the next few months. I want to specially endorse the Camden Yards Baseball concession stand fundraisers. I am not able to attend this, but those who can should, it is a great time and earns money for our council. Secondly the installation ceremony for our officers is August 18th, 1:00pm at St. Peters. The ceremony includes mass, the installation and a Picnic style lunch. The luncheon is at the Parish hall. We hope to have some games for the kids, the usual speechifying, and some door prizes.
On a serious note, WE NEED YOU. The theme this year for our council is Re-Build, Re-New and Reunite. I am looking for a few good knights to assist in leading the council. I want to create and publish our yearly calendar as soon as possible. If you're available please attend the Executive meeting on 5th to help.
Activities will be the strength of our council to accomplish the theme and have the activities I am looking for activities directors. If you have an interest in Church, Community, Council, Family or Youth activities let me know. I would rather have committees for these as opposed to one guy for each.
Hope to see you all at the Installation.
Yours in Service, Rick Allison, GK

Chaplain's Message
by Fr. LaHood
I had a discussion with one of my brother seminarians once about which month of the year is the most "pious." He argued for December. I argued for August. I eventually won him over. It is the month with the fewest "ferial" days (days without a feast). Also, right in the middle (August 15th) we have the glorious feast of Our Lady's Assumption. There is also a Feast of Our Lord, the Feast of the Transfiguration (the 6th). It begins with St. Alphonsus Ligouri on the 1st (a lawyer who became a priest!). There is a feast of an Apostle (St. Bartholomew on the 24th); St. Monica and St. Augustine (27th and 28th); St. Dominic (8th); St. John Vianny (4th). Tucked in between St. Pius X (21st) and St. Rose of Lima (23rd) is another Feast of Our Lady, the Queenship of Mary (22nd). This whole month long feast of feasts wraps up on the 29th with the Feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist.
I think now perhaps you may agree with me! August may be the dog days but the Church provides us with so many Saints and events to celebrate we can forget about how hot it is.
This month is also special for our Council as we install our officers. Keep especially Rick Allison in your prayers as he becomes our Grand Knight. I have agreed to continue as your chaplain. We all look forward to a great fraternal year. Have a wonderful August.

Insurance Report
by Rick Morin, FICF/LUTCF - Your K of C Insurance Agent (301) 384-7627
How Do Annuities Compare With Other Investments?
| Feature | K of C Annuity | CD's | Mutual Funds |
| Tax-deferred | yes | no | no |
| Avoids probate | yes | no | no |
| Safety | yes | yes | no |
| Guaranteed Lifetime Income | yes | no | no |
| Liquidity | yes | yes | yes |
Which are important to you? Which make a difference to your financial well being? Annuities are growing in popularity. Why? The annuity may be used to fund an IRA (new or a rollover), save money for retirement, leave to children (avoids probate), provide a lifetime monthly income -- all these possibilities with guaranteed interest and safety. "Time is money"; tax deferral buys time. The more time you can buy, the faster and larger your assets can grow. The Knights of Columbus is a 44 billion-dollar nonprofit insurance company for Catholics with the highest possible rating given by the A. M. Best Company (A++ superior) and Standard & Poor (AAA superior).
Call Rick Morin, your Brother Knight and council's field agent today ... so he can review the "ins and outs" of our Order's outstanding Annuity Programs.

District Deputy Message
by District Deputy Joe Feakes
The standard put forth by our Worthy State Deputy, Richard L. Sherbert, "First Charity", is a powerful and challenging test. Charity is the cornerstone of the Knights of Columbus. It is fundamental to our Catholic Faith. St Paul writes, "So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (1 Corinthians 13:13)
How can we put these words into action? Exactly! With actions. As Knights, we are given many opportunities to live our faith through our Surge With Service projects. All councils should now have a full compliment of program chairmen, and ideally, co-chairmen. I encourage each council member to participate in at least one program or project a quarter at whatever level you can. You will be surprised how many good things happen when we all work together.
One important result of good programs and strong participation is membership. What better way for men and their families to become aware of the Catholic values so important to our order, than to see by example and invitation?
Let's talk about membership. Last month I listed my three priorities for this fraternal year. Membership, quality membership, was number one. If our councils are to have successful programs, broad-based participation, and strong leadership, attracting new members is essential. Remember the ASK principle. We have a great deal to offer. Each council is different. Each has its own personality. Each has special qualities that can offer a Catholic man and his family numerous ways to enrich their lives and the lives of others.
Be proud of who you are and the good work that you do. Wear the emblem of the order with dignity. Where else but the Knights of Columbus can a man have the chance to work with a shovel or a rake in his hand and still carry a Rosary in his pocket? Whether his interest lies in hammer and nails or bread and wine, we have a way for that man to share his gifts and create a better community and a better church for all of us.
Your District Warden,Yen Le, and I, and our wives, Nu and Lynn, hope that all of you are enjoying a relaxing and refreshing summer. Please continue to pray for our order and our country. God bless America.
Vivat Jesus.

Let's welcome Ben J. Santaiti and James H. Siemucha who joined our Council by taking the First Degree exsemplification on June 17, 2002 at St. Peter's School. Warm welcome also is extended to Clarkie Huges who joined us by reapplication in June, 2002.
Although we did not make the Star Council this year, we sure tried. We should be proud of the past 25 consecutive years' Star Council Awards. We can start over again and look toward the next 25 years.

Health For KC Membership Longevity
by Bill Gulban
I am sorry to have missed the quick newsletter deadline for the July issue. I was thanked by several member-readers who enjoyed my articles. When you see me at any event just tell me your comments and if you may request any health article for me to write. At this writing I have a new hat. The new Grand Knight asked me to be the Director of Church Activities.
This month's title is on orange juice (OJ). Full-page newspaper ads recently proclaimed: "A new clinical study shows enjoying two glasses of Tropicana Pure Premium every day can lower your blood pressure (BP) an average of 10 points." It's true that consuming orange juice and other foods rich in potassium may reduce elevated blood pressure. But can most Americans expect that drinking 16 ounces a day of Tropicana will lower their BP by 10 points?
Dennis Sprecher, M.D., head of preventive cardiology at Cleveland Clinic, says no. Their study did show an average 10 millimeter drop, but that does not translate into results we would see in the general population. That's because the unpublished trial, funded by Tropicana, was too small, including just 24 men and women. And since the pilot study was not placebo-controlled, it does not establish whether the BP lowering effect it found was caused by drinks consumed or other factors.
In successive two-week intervals, the volunteers drank two 8-ounce glasses a day of either one of four test beverages: Tropicana Pure Premium, Tropicana Orange Juice with Double Vitamin C and 100% Vitamin E, a third not-from-concentrate OJ with double the normal amount of vitamin C, a the fourth drink that contained vitamin C but no OJ. Measurements at the end of each test period found that all four drinks---including the one that contained no OJ---reduced BP. That analysis was the basis for Topicana's advertisement claim. After Dr. Sprecher undertook the issue with Tropicana he was assured that future ads would not pledge a 10-point reduction in BP.
Some evidence suggests that vitamin C might help lower BP. But it's mainly the high potassium content of OJ---not just Tropicana brand products---that's believed to protect against hypertension and improve BP control. That's is why the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and government hypertension-prevention guidelines recommend diets containing foods that are good sources of potassium. Those foods include avocados, bananas, cantaloupe, potatoes,
and spinach, as well as certain fruit or vegetable juices: carrot, grapefruit, tomato, and oh, yes---OJ.
