Grand Knight's Message
Good Brothers,
We have rounded the corner and are entering the final laps of the fraternal and liturgical year. We have a lot to look back on, and a very good future ahead of us. Let's pull together to make our council a more spiritual group during this Lenten season. Pray your rosary daily.
We are halfway through the Lenten season. Let's make Lent special and attend the First Friday devotions on March 5th and April 2nd as a group. I would like to see as many brothers there for these devotions as can make it wearing their jewels of office and name tags.
We have the Spaghetti dinner this month on the 21st, I hope to see you there.
Back in February we helped out as the cooks for the St. Peters' Youth Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper. I owe a debt of gratitude to Walt Daku and Emmet Tidings, you guys were great. Chuck Biebrich got a last minute call to support the crosses on the lawn for Pro-life. Thanks Chuck for pitching in for the council.
I hope to see all of you at the First Firday devotions.
Rick Allison, GK
District Deputy Report
by Joe Feakes
Well we made it to Spring! Not only that, but we are halfway through Lent. I encourage every member of the council to use this special season to demonstrate the one aspect of the Knights of Columbus that sets us apart from the majority of other fraternal organizations- our Catholic Faith.
As Catholic gentlemen you can be leaders in your church and community. Prayer groups, hours of adoration, recitation of the Rosary, Stations of the Cross are all available to us as we seek to strengthen our faith and enable others to do the same.
On another note, many thanks and congratulations to everyone who in any way contributed to the success of this year's Tootsie Roll Campaign. As I write this article, the banquet is on week away. From preliminary reports I have every reason to believe that it will be a crowning event. I will have more to say about this topic next month.
As you know, we are always on the lookout for qualified men to join our ranks. We are also always looking for qualified men to assume leadership roles. There are no special skills required, only a willingness to serve. Don't allow this task to fall upon a "chosen" few. While on the subject of new members, it is very important that we follow up as quickly as possible with the men who expressed interest during the Membership Blitz. Don't let this opportunity get away.
Keep up the good work on membership, retention, and programs. Not only do we want to finish this fraternal year in strong position, we also want to lay a solid foundation for those who will follow.
Happy Spring to all from Yen, Nu, Lynn, and Joe.

Praise the Lord -- Vote Only For ?????
by Ben Santaiti, Chairman, Pro-Life Committee
Finally, after more than 30 years of America killing its "INNOCENTS", some Catholic Bishops have publicly condemned politicians that claim to be Catholic, yet support abortion laws. Bishop Burke of La Crosse, Wisconsin and Bishop Hughes of New Orleans have said that Catholic legislators who openly support the taking of human life (abortion, euthanasia) should NOT partake of Holy Communion. Bishop Hughes went further and warned Catholic voters: "Moreover, citizens who promote this unjust taking of human life by their vote or support of such candidates share in responsibility for this grave evil."
So, when it comes time to vote in any election, please....PRAISE THE LORD and VOTE only for Pro-Life politicians.

As of February, our Council has recruited a total of 7 new members and one re-admission member. Although we are picking up our momentum in recruiting, we still need many more to meet our quota of 22. Let's continue our efforts and try harder to invite our friends, family members, fellow parishioners and co-workers to join us. For membership information and application forms, please call Ed Ramos at 301-924-1898 or Homer Chen at 301-460-0580.
Insurance News: It Takes More Than Money
by Rick Morin, FICF/LUTCF, Your K of C Agent, 301.384.7627
Most commodities can be bought provided you: 1) Have the money, 2) can find a willing seller, and 3) can agree on a satisfactory price. In like manner, most investments -- real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, bank accounts -- required only an arm's length agreement and a deal is struck. All it takes is money!
There is one notable exception to the above statements. The purchase of life insurance. When the purchase of life insurance is considered, in addition to setting aside dollars, the prospective insured must prove that he is in good health. If a man is deemed to be "uninsurable", no amount of money will make this commodity available to him.
The ability to qualify for life insurance is an asset that is temporary at best. Without warning, your health can fail, and you may never be able to add to your life insurance program. Other hazards may prevent you from qualifying -- occupation, character, even old age. What would happen if you suddenly woke up and decided to buy life insurance, but had lost your ability to qualify for it? Ever think about that?
I can tell you about our guaranteed purchase option. Think of that! The ability to secure additional insurance, depending on the amount of your option, on a guaranteed basis -- without necessarily being in good health. This option can be added at issue of a new certificate up through age 37. Find out at your convenience how little it costs to guarantee the right to increase your protection.
Call me today for an appointment. I want to hear from you.
Fraternally, Rick Morin

Orioles Concession Fundraiser
The 2004 Baseball season is upon us and it's here with a great opportunity to raise funds for our council.
As you know the concession stands at Camden Yards are manned by charitable organizations thru Aramark Corp.
Participating organizations share a % of the gross sales from that concession stand for that game. We are lucky enough to be participating in 2 day games, one on July 5th, Orioles vs. Minn and the other on September 6th, Orioles vs. Tampa Bay. We need 18 people, 17 years old or older, to man a stand for each game.
Each game begins at 1:35 pm, however concession workers should be present at least 2 - 3 hours before each game. If you are interested in participating or have any questions please contact Jack Giacalone 301 774 6338.
Health for K of C Membership Longetivity
by Bill Gulban
Low-carb foods: less than meets the eye. A few years ago the cry was "low-fat" or "nonfat," as new food products came on the market positioned to appeal to the weight-conscious and the health-conscious. You could avoid most fat but still eat your ice cream and cookies. In some ways the trend to low-fat and fat-free foods was beneficial; in other ways it was not. Nonfat milk is a good thing, but nonfat junk food is still junk food, of course. Many consumers failed to notice that a low-fat cookie often has as many calories as the regular kind, and many assumed it was okay to eat the whole box.
Now the craze is for low-carbohydrate foods. If you've been to the grocery store lately, or even to McDonald's or Blimpie, you've seen promotions for "low-carb"foods. Many breads, sandwiches, muffins, pasta, cereals, tortillas, pizza crusts, beer, cakes, cookies, and other foods now bear "low-carb" labels. While the health claims are seldom spelled out, the implications are clear. If you're following a low-carb diet (such as Atkins) that forbids or severely limits bread, pasta, and other starchy foods, especially those made with white flour, you might think, well, here's a way to eat some bread and still stay on the diet. Indeed, many low-carb products are sold under the Atkins brand name. Or perhaps you're not on any diet but are just calorie conscious. You may conclude, logically enough, that a food lower in carbs is also lower in calories. Or you may buy the new stuff because you're attracted to new products, and you think that there's a law against false claims on food labels, so you conclude that low-carb claims must be (a) true and (b) meaningful. In fact, "low-carb" is not what it seems. And any benefits these foods might offer for weight loss or nutrition are debatable, at best. If you replace carbohydrates with protein (that's the main change), you still have just as many calories. Furthermore, the labels are, essentially, meaningless. The FDA has no definition of "low-carbohydrate" and has never approved any low-carb labels. Any food can be so labeled.
Bringing down the carbs. Here's how the manufacturers reduce the carbs in various foods:
Is the difference real, though? None of these changes are unhealthy. But these products end up having nearly as many calories as their regular counterparts, and cutting calories is still the key to weight control. Protein has as many calories as do, and fat has more twice as many calories. The products often have nearly as many carbs, too, but the labels disguise this fact with tricks. (There is more to write on this article, and the next newsletter issue will complete the article). In the meantime, advice is "Don't be fooled by low-carb foods. There's no evidence that they'll help you lose weight".

Fundraiser-Spaghetti Dinner. At the February Council executive meeting I took a step upward and forward to make myself available to chair temporarily the "Ways & Means Committee" and further, to chair a specific event, a spaghetti dinner. As a fundraiser our goal is to raise funds and begin to reinstate some of the suspended activities that were recently suspended because of this years financial shortfall. The complete spaghetti dinner menu includes tomato sauce, meatballs, salad with Italian dressing, Italian bread, beverage and desert. The date is Sunday, March 21, 2004, -5:00 to 7:30 p.m. See more details in flyer elsewhere in this newsletter. Please lend a hand for some time and call me for making this event a success and having a great time. A second planning meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, March 2, 7:30 pm at the Marians cottage.
