District Deputy Message April 2004
by Joe Feakes
First, I must apologize to all of our newsletter editors. With all the preparation for the Cardinal's Charity Ball, I missed my deadline for the District Deputy's article for May. Thank you brothers for your patience.
The 44th Cardinal's Charity Ball to support the Joseph P. Kennedy Institute was a tremendous success. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who contributed in any way. I don't have the final numbers yet, but I am certain that we will surpass last year's total.
As I mentioned last month, May is a special time for all members of the Knights of Columbus and their families. May is Mary's month. Mary, "Queen of the Knights" deserves our special attention. Our Blessed Mother is the express lane to Our Lord and Savior. I ask that you set aside some time this month and pray your Rosary. You do know where it is? Our world is not a happy place right now. Our prayers and good works can make a difference.
I know that every council has many activities planned for this month. I ask every Brother Knight to make some effort to attend at least one event. The Knights of Columbus needs every man active. I know that I didn't join just to pay dues, and I don't think you did either. If you are not sure what programs are planed, call your Grand Knight. If you find something that you like, volunteer to help. You will be surprised how much more you will get out of it.
We only have a few weeks left in this fraternal year, but don't quit on your membership activities. Everyone is on the membership committee. If you have some ideas for activities for next year, contact one of your council officers. We are always looking for new ways to include as many members and their families as possible.
Hope to see you at the State Convention.
From Yen, Nu, Lynn, and me,
Vivat Jesus!

Health for K of C Membership Longevity
by Bill Gulban
Raising "Good" Cholesterol Without Drugs. Reducing levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol is an important goal in preventing and managing coronary heart disease (CHD). But increasingly, raising levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL, "good") cholesterol is also viewed as important in preventing a heart attack. About 30% of people with CHD have normal levels of LDL cholesterol but low levels of HDL cholesterol. The fact that HDL has a cardio-protective benefit has been recognized since the 1950s, but only recently has there been a growing emphasis placed on low HDL levels as an independent risk factor for CHD. People with HDL cholesterol levels below 35 mg/dl have a significantly elevated rate of heart attacks.
Some recent studies show that raising low HDL cholesterol levels can decrease the rate of heart attacks and other CHD events. In fact, increasing HDL cholesterol may be as important as decreasing LDL cholesterol for avoiding heart attacks. In one study, the VA HDL Intervention Trial (VAHIT), 2,531 men with known CHD who had normal LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol levels (average 32 mg/dl) were treated with gemfibrozil (Lopid), which can raise levels of HDL cholesterol but has minimal effects on LDL cholesterol. The subjects' HDL cholesterol increased by 6%, and the rate of CHD events dropped 22%, with no significant decrease in LDL cholesterol. Further analysis showed that the incidence of CHD events was reduced only in those with diabetes or insulin resistance.
How to raise HDL. Part of the reason HDL has received less attention than LDL is that there haven't been easy methods for increasing it. Several meds, including gemfibrozil, fenofibrate, statin drugs, and niacin, can increase HDL levels-some of them by 10% to 20%--but these drugs are usually reserved for high-risk patients.
However, five lifestyle measures can also make a difference-and they should be followed whether or not you use any medications:

A New Council Widow's Program
Last January the Maryland State Council reported to our Council the printing and distribution of 523 "Widow's VIP Cards" from 42 Councils and urged all Councils to improve the rewarding of their widows program. As you know our Council's present program consists of Council sympathy card, flower bouquet/dish garden or a memorial contribution in behalf of the deceased Brother Knight sent to the widow or next of kin, and an open invitation to our widows to attend all Council events, a special annual memorial Mass (usually held in November), and occasional assistance in offering car ride to Memorial Mass with dinner prior to the event.
As Council Chancellor I have reviewed the State Council model program and worked up the improvement additions to our Council Widow's program. They were approved during the January executive meeting and consists of the following:
This is the first publishing in our Newsletter. Steps in requesting and to develop the VIP Cards are being worked up by furnishing the State Council with the list of our Council deceased Brother Knights, his affiliations, council and assembly numbers, and widow or next of kin names.

Insurance Report
by Rick Morin, FICF/LUTCF, Your K of C Insurance Agent (301) 384 7627
Money Back Term Insurance--Sound too good to be true? If it does, it usually is not true.
Many people buy term insurance because it is considered cheap insurance. Unfortunately, when the term runs out, the member continues to need the protection. Now the member is forced to qualify and, if he can, usually pays a higher premium.
Term insurance has its place. It may be used to protect someone for a specific need or for a specific time period. It may be used to provide large amounts of insurance protection when there is a need to divert premiums to everyday living needs.
Unfortunately, it may be the most expensive when the member lives beyond the term period and asks . . . "What is my policy worth?"
A policy should provide the amount of protection that is needed for a specific time. Then the cash values in the policy may be used for other purposes, such as, education funds, retirement income, prepay other obligations or used in the event of an emergency.
"Money Back Term" is a misnomer. However, your life policy can work just like it.
Call your Brother Knight and council's field agent today to ask about evaluating your life insurance portfolio.
