Fraternal Benefits

AN ECONOMIC MUST

Do you have seat belts in you car? Of course you do! How many do you have? Aren't you certain that you have one for every member of your family? Would you buy an automobile that only provided one "belt" -- that being for you?

But would you believe that family after family with whom I visit are running along with the one "belt" of insurance on the father. Somehow, the common opinion seems to be that death will strike only the father -- not the mother.

Today, insuring your wife's life is an economic must. With "wife insurance," should death occur, you have a fighting chance to retain at least a semblance of a home for your children.

Call me today to discuss these needs.

Fraternally,
Rick Morin, FICF/LUTCF, Your K of C Agent 301-384-7627

District Deputy Report

by Kevin Jeffords

"Build for your team a feeling of oneness, of dependence upon one another."
- Quote by Vince Lombardi

As members of the Knights of Columbus, how can we show our council leaders that we are working together as a TEAM? Membership... This is the start of our new fraternal year, a fresh start, a time not to look back on what was done last year, but a time to plan and step forward and work together as one.

Focus on membership now. Don't wait. What is the best way to get a member to join our order? Ask him. Always carry a form #100 with you. The gentlemen you see in church every Sunday, the young father with a family. Explain what the Knights of Columbus is all about. Explain that we are not a "men's club" but a "Catholic Family Fraternal Service Organization." We involve everyone in the family.

Once in our order, each member should stress the "Shining Armor Award." Within the first year of his membership the new Knight must be involved in at least three council service programs, attend at least three council business meetings, receive their second and third degrees, meet with their council's insurance representative. And recruit a least one new member.

You don't have to ask your Grand Knight if you can be on the recruiting team. You already are. The day you joined the order you became part of the team. Recruiting in our order is a 24-7 responsibility.

Plan a recruitment drive soon. There are great ideas on the State web site www.kofc-md.org . Click on membership, then Membership programs and informational items. The State membership team has put together a great site and great ideas to help all councils. Your can also contact myself or anyone of the State Membership team.

Please continue to pray for our troops.

Attention Fourth Degree Members

The Master of the Washington District has announced the formation of a new Assembly in Montgomery County. The new Assembly, which will be formed over the summer, will be called the Sullivan Brothers Assembly. The new Assembly will cover the following Councils: Mater Dei, St. Elizabeth, Blessed Manyanet, Montgomery and Fr. Peter Paul Maher.

Numerically Fr. Peter Paul Maher Council will be the largest council in the new Assembly. Every Fourth Degree Member of Fr. Maher Council should seriously consider a transfer to the new Assembly. For those who have long been members of Cardinal O'Boyle Assembly the idea of a transfer may be difficult. Long established relationships with Cardinal O'Boyle Assembly will not be easy to give up. However, an opportunity presents itself to be a Charter Member of the New Assembly. After the Institution of the Sullivan Brothers Assembly, it will be the home assembly of our Council.

An organizational meeting was held on Monday, June 14th at St. Raphael's Parish center on Falls Road, Potomac. The purpose of the meeting was to explain to transferring S/Ks the status of the New Assembly. Items covered at the meeting included the assembly name, election of new officers, meeting times and place, dues, and approval of by-laws.

Over 50 members transferred into the Sullivan Brothers Assembly at the organizational meeting chaired by the Master of the Washington District. The elected officers are: Faithful Navigator - SK Tom Schneider, Faithful Captain - SK John Durbin, Faithful Pilot - SK Bob Caron. The Faithful Admiral will be SK Joe Feakes. The Assembly will meet the third Thursday of the month at Montgomery Council in Derwood. The first meeting will be on Thursday, July 15, 2004. Installation of Officers and formal Institution will be on September 11, 2004, at St. Raphael's Parish in Potomac. Mass will begin at 2:30 pm.

Fourth Degree Members are encouraged to contact PGK Bob Caron (301-774-6951) for additional information or to make arrangements for transferring to the Sullivan Brothers Assembly.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game ! ! !

baseball

1 down - 1 to go!

The 2004 Baseball season is upon us and here with a great opportunity to raise funds for our council.

On July 5th the Council manned concession stand # 103 at Camden Yards. It was a very successful event for both the Council and the Orioles, who beat Tampa Bay 4-2.

We signed up to do 2 games this season and game 2 is, Sept 6th vs. Minnesota. The concession stands at Camden Yards are manned by charitable organizations thru Aramark Corp. Participating organizations share a percent of the gross sales from the concession stand for the game.

We need 18 people, 18 years old or older, to man the stand. Participants can be Knights, spouses or children. The game begins at 1:35 pm; however concession workers should be present at least three hours before each game. This stand only sells to fans that come to the concession stand to purchase items. We DO NOT walk the stadium selling food or drinks. We still need 12 people for this game......Come join the fun .....If you have any questions, or wish to sign up please contact Jack Giacalone at 301-774-6338.

Health for K of C Membership: Longevity

by Bill Gulban

Recent public news finds that insurance companies will allow claims for obesity. My take on this news is exactly what are the measures for one who meets the over weight standards. I may find that the overhang on my belt and that my belly on a medium frame whose weight is 160 lbs. and beyond the standard, and I might be considered obese.

My next month's topic will reveal some facts on the standard of obesity. But now, my following topic is how to keep from getting overweight and how to work off the fat.

Finding joy in movement. It's inspiring to watch world-class athletes achieve remarkable levels of fitness, set new records, and turn in peak performances, as we'll undoubtedly see during the Summer Olympic Games in August at Athens. But to think anyone who is dedicated to being active-from your neighbor who faithfully takes his morning walk to your coworker who rarely misses her Pilates class-is not motivated by Olympic dreams, but by an inner desire to feel healthier and stronger and because they come to enjoy it.

I realize the force of inertia is great so here are some latest thoughts on how to promote less-sedentary lifestyles.

Health professional can spur activity. Research shows that doctors can be powerful motivators, especially in the short term, by simply asking their patients about their exercise habits (many don't) and encouraging them to be active. For example, a doctor says to patients, "What could you do, and what sounds appealing?" Exercise may be the closest thing to a "magic bullet" that modern medicine can recommend. Moderate activity has benefits. Studies have found that the biggest health benefits come when you go from being a couch potato to exercising moderately and regularly. Activity need not be vigorous to be effective. The key is consistency: Get at least 30 minutes a day (in one or several sessions) of moderate-intensity activity (a level that feels comfortable), most days of the week.

Exercise guidelines suggest you might need 60 minutes on most days to achieve and maintain weight loss. Walking an extra 20 minutes daily can burn off 7 lbs. of body fat according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. Longer, moderately paced daily walks (40 minutes at 60% to 65% of maximum heart rate) will lead to more weight loss. Faster walks (20 to 25 minutes at 75% to 85% of maximum heart rate) are better for conditioning the heart and lungs.

Overcome your obstacles. Recognize what's stopping you.

Tailor your program to address your individual needs and excuses. Be a change agent. Being active is a personal responsibility. Still, many communities aren't well designed for movement. They may lack sidewalks for walking and roads that are bike-friendly. The long-term health of our nation's future generations is at stake. Learn to love it. Regular exercisers aren't just doing it for the health reasons or to improve their appearance or performance. They've made movement a priority in their lives, and found ways to keep it pleasurable and fun.

This article is supported by Dr. Weil's Self Healing Medical Newsletter, and the John Hopkins's Medical Letter.
