GRAND KNIGHT'S MESSAGE

Dear Brother Knights and Ladies, we have just turned in our First Quarter Surge with Service Activity Report. I am happy to share with you that we had activities to report in all of the service areas: Church, Community, Council, Family and Youth. I feel proud when I look at our activities because I realized that they represented Fr Peter Paul Maher Council working together to support our community. I want to sincerely thank each of you and your families for the sacrifices you have made to make the motto of our State Deputy a reality: IT IS IN GIVING THAT WE RECEIVE. I know that not everyone can do everything all of the time but by pitching in when and where we can, we will continue to make a difference. Special thanks to those who help put our report together. Good job!

Brothers, in my desire to do a good job, I have omitted to acknowledge our Knight of the Month and Family of the Month. Here they are:

Family of the Month Knight of the Month
July 2004   Jack and Phyllis Giacalone Bob Caron
August 2004   Bob and Barbara Mazonkey E. J. Cummings
September 2004   John and Patricia Moore Bill Gulban

Thanks to all!

Finally, let me remind everybody about our upcoming Dinner Dance and Silent Auction. This represents our first major fundraiser. I am asking for your full support to make this activity a success. Let's have fun together while we get to know each other better and grow as a family! Continue to pray your Rosary and pray for our troops.

Yours in Christ,
Innocent P. d'Almeida
Grand Knight

DISTRICT DEPUTY'S MESSAGE

November is the month in which the Knights of Columbus remembers our departed members and their families. It always impresses me that this is the only organization that will pray for the repose of deceased member's souls at these special Masses. Please make it a point to attend your Council memorial Mass; it is your fraternal duty.

The State Memorial Mass will be on Sunday November 14th at 2:30 PM at Saint Agnes Church located on Old Frederick Road in Catonsville, and the dinner will follow at Patapsco Council #1960. The cost of the dinner is $17.00 per person. If anyone is interested, please contact Michael Sallese at 1-410-836-8953. There will be no tickets sold at the door.

I have received your Councils quarterly reports and have turned them over to the State for their review and grading. I read each and every report and I want to thank every Council member for the hard work you and your Council members put into these programs. The next quarterly reports are due January 15th. I would ask that Chairman or officer carry a camera with them and take pictures at each event your Council has.

This is the start of the Christmas season. Please remember the needy and the elderly, and also keep our troops in your prayers.

My wife Shirley and I and District Warden Ernest Harley and his wife Marye, want to wish each and everyone a happy Thanksgiving.

FRATERNAL BENEFITS

WHAT IF?

If you knew that today was the last chance you would ever have to buy additional life insurance, how much would you buy? If you had a money-making machine, that once broken, could never be repaired, how much would you insure it for?

If you knew that today was the last time you would have the opportunity to guarantee your family an income if something happened to you, how much income would you give them? If you knew that today marked the end of your ability to buy future retirement security, how much would you buy?

Isn't it safe to say that you would put some additional dollars into more life insurance protection that could be used for family or retirement benefits?

Chances are that you will be around for a long time, but life is full of "ifs" and surprises, isn't it?

Let me help you plan for the future. Call me today.

Fraternally,

Rick Morin, FICF/LUTCF

HEALTH FOR K OF C MEMBERSHIP LONGETIVITY

by Bill Gulban

Confronting Colds and Flu. A cold may slow you down, but the flu reduces you to crawl-directly into bed. The following are integrative strategies to stay well or recover more quickly in case one gets sick.

Preventing problems. To avoid catching colds and flu, common sense prevails. Keep your distance from people who are infected. Realize that germs enter your body when your hands come in contact with surfaces that harbor viruses and bacteria, like a telephone or doorknob, then touch your eyes, nose, mouth, or even the food you eat. Germs stand less of a chance when you wash your hands frequently and also drink plenty of water to flush out your system. Getting enough rest, getting modera5te exercise, and getting a grip on stress are three more ways to boost your immunity. Be an advocate for a sensible diet including plenty of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, whole grains and beans, with moderate amounts of "good" fats. What's more, taking a daily multivitamin/mineral (though there's not much evidence that extra vitamin C helps prevent either colds or flu). For additional immune-boosting protection, you might also take the Chinese tonic herb astragalus every day; follow package directions.

Get a yearly flu shot if your doctor recommends one. For people aged 5 to 49 who are basically healthy and not pregnant, the nasal-spray flu vaccine is a newer alternative. Unlike the flu shot, which contains inactivated forms of the virus, the nasal spray contains weakened forms of the live influenza virus and involves no needles, but it appears to be comparatively effective at preventing flu.

Treating flu. When you are exhausted, having high fever, and your body aches fro flu, taking Tamiflu, one of several prescription antiviral medications (Relenza is another) can help shorten the illness and lessen its severity, if taken within the first two days after your symptoms appear. Some preliminary studies in Israel suggest taking Sambucol offers promise for reducing both the duration and severity of flu. Sambucol is a black elderberry extract sold at health food stores that's rich in flavonoids (antioxidant compounds) and is a pleasant-tasting syrup appealing to children and adults. It is safe to take along with prescription medications for flu.

Weathering colds. Despite your best efforts, you might come down with a cold. At the first sign of one, reach for Echinacea. One form is the tincture (liquid extract) the immune-stimulating herb, and the dosage is one teaspoon four times a day, which can shorten the duration (but not prevent) a cold and lessen its severity. Another herb that can be used is andrographis, also known as Kan jang or Indian Echinacea. This cold fighting herb, popular in Scandinavia, is taken when symptoms first appear. Eating more garlic can shore up your immune system, by chopping or mashing one to two raw cloves a day and mixing it into food. Evidence for zinc lozenges are not convincing, so they are not recommended
