Grand Knight's Message
VOLUNTEERS
We are about to head into the busiest 4 months of our Council's Calendar, August thru November. Many meetings will be scheduled and many of our brother Knights and their spouses will be working hard ensuring that our activities and programs are presented professionally and seamlessly. It would appear that we have a cast of hundreds to do all the work that needs to be done to ensure that you are happy with the result. Let me assure you that that is not always the case.
As an organization we are constantly in need of volunteers, Brother Knights and their spouses, to help us with the planning and staffing of our events. We need your ideas and creativity to do it better and a little of your time to get it done. This is the only way we will keep our council alive, active and growing. It's never too late to volunteer. Visit our website or the July newsletter and review the 2005-06 Council Calendar and choose an activity you can do with your spouse or family. Or, just check out this newsletter and you'll have plenty to choose from. Then give me a call and we will sign you up. It's great fun; you'll meet some great people working side by side with some of the best in the business. So "Come Grow with us" and hope to see ya soon.....

Fraternal Benefits - A Way Of Life
When was the last time your wife went shopping for the day and left you to mind the children? How would you handle this responsibility day after day, plus having to work?
When I ask this question, I find that most of our members have closed their minds to this possibility.
Unfortunately, it does happen, you know. No man likes to place a monetary value on his spouse. But money is the only thing that will give you a fighting chance to keep a semblance of a home for your kids should anything happen to your wife.
Many insurance men call it "wife insurance". I like to call it "way of life" insurance. Call me today for an appointment. I want to hear from you.
Fraternally, Rick Morin

District Deputy's Message
"Build for your team a feeling of oneness, of dependence upon one another" --Vince Lombardi
As members of the Knights of Columbus, how can we show our council leaders that we are working together as a TEAM? Membership... This is the start of our new fraternal year, a fresh start, a time not to look back on what was done last year, but a time to plan and step forward and work together as one.
Focus on membership now. Don't wait. What is the best way to get a member to join our order? "Ask him". Always carry a form #100 with you. The gentlemen you see in church every Sunday, the young father with a family. Explain what the Knights of Columbus is all about. Explain that we are not a "men's club" but a "Catholic Family Fraternal Service Organization". We involve everyone in the family.
Once in our order, each member should stress the "Shining Armor Award". Within the first year of his membership the new Knight must be involved in at least three council service programs, attend at least three council business meetings, receive their second and third degrees, meet with their council's insurance representative. And recruit a least one new member.
You don't have to ask your Grand Knight if you can be on the recruiting team. You already are. The day you joined the order you became part of the team. Recruiting in our order is a 24-7 responsibility.
Plan a recruitment drive soon. There are great ideas on the State web site www.kofc-md.org. Click on membership, then Membership programs and informational items. The State membership team has put together a great site and great ideas to help all councils. Your can also contact myself or anyone of the State Membership team.
Please continue to pray for our troops.
Kevin L. Jeffords, District Deputy #11
Installation of New Officers
On Sunday, August 21, 2005, Father Peter Paul Maher Council 6793 will hold the Installation of Officers for the 2005-2006 Council Year. The incoming Officers and their wives, cordially invite you and your family to join us on this occasion.
We will begin the ceremony at 12:30PM with the Celebration of Mass at St. Patrick's Church, (Muncaster Mill Rd and Rt. 28), Rockville, Maryland. Installation of Officers will follow Mass, with a reception and dinner to follow in the Parish Center.
Please join us in celebrating the beginning of our new Council year. Your presence will signify your support for the Council and its newly elected officers. In order to plan for food and refreshments, it is respectfully requested that you R.S.V.P. to one of the following by Friday, August 5, 2005. (Please do not assume that because you have been to other Installations that your call is not needed. We do not want to embarrass the Council by not having adequate seating or food).

Dinner Dance Silent Auction Update
Response to our June mailing for donations from the business community has been good. There will be many interesting items up for auction on October 15.
Response to our July mailing for donations from our Council members has been less than expected. We have only received a few donations to date. Please remember that the Dinner Dance Silent Auction is the Councils primary fundraiser for the year, and we need your help to make it a success.
So please, if you haven't done so already, give Joe Feakes a call, 301 774 0137, and donate those Tickets, Collectables, Services or that Get Away Vacation Opportunity. Get together with other families and create a great basket of wine, books, toys etc... You'll feel good knowing that your donation will benefit the Community Support and Charitable Programs of the Council.
Donations are needed no later than Saturday October 1st 2005. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.

Serious protection against kidney stones. What are kidney stones? They are pebble-like crystals that form when certain chemicals build up in your urine. Who gets them? One out of 10 people suffers a kidney stone in his lifetime. Men are more prone to them than women, but kidney problems and family history also put you at risk. What are the symptoms?: Bloody, smelly, cloudy, or burning urine; urge to urinate often; stabbing, irregular pain in the back or side; fever, chills, or weakness; nausea or vomiting.
Be wary of these popular myths. It bombards you every day from your newspapers, magazines, and neighbors-the latest, greatest health advice. But many times, following it may actually put you more at risk for health problems, including kidney stones. Myth: Kidney stone sufferers should avoid calcium because it's a major stone ingredient. True, calcium is a common ingredient in kidney stones. Yet, surprisingly eating foods high in calcium seems to prevent stones. Confused? Scientists aren't. They believe that dietary calcium binds with dietary oxalate while the two compounds are in your digestive system. Otherwise, they could become concentrated in your urine, crystallize, and grow into a stone. So stock up on foods rich in calcium. These include low-fat dairy products, sardines, oysters, broccoli, black-eyed peas, peanuts, and turnip greens. Be cautious with calcium supplements. Unlike food sources, this form of calcium might increase your risk of kidney stones.
Eleven foods that aren't kind to your kidneys. You may have foods in your kitchen that contain oxalate, a natural plant chemical that's also a major ingredient in kidney stones. Though some may be your favorites, steer clear of them if you have a history of kidney stones. They include soy products, coffee, cola, spinach, beets, nuts, chocolate, tea, wheat bran, strawberries, and rhubarb.
Healthy habits. Once you have one kidney stone, you're likely to have another. That's a good reason to follow these day-to-day suggestions to prevent them:

Take Me Out to the Ball Game ! ! !
Still need 6 volunteers to staff this game, Please help us out !!!
The 2005 Baseball season is upon us and the O's are having a great season....
As you know the concession stands at Camden Yards are manned by charitable organizations thru Aramark Corp. participating organizations share a % of the gross sales from that concession stand for that game. Last year the council brought in over $1900 to help support council activities. We will be manning the concession stand on Labor Day September 5th, Orioles vs. Tampa Bay.
We need 18 people, 17 years old or older, to man a stand for each game.
Each game begins at 1:35pm; however concession workers should be present at least 2 - 3 hours before each game. This stand only sells food and beverages to fans that come to the stand, we DO NOT walk the stadium to sell these items
If you are interested in participating or have any questions please contact Jack Giacalone at 301-774-6338.
Council Loses Long Time Member
On 21 June 2005, the Council lost long time member S/K Joseph A. Cimmino, PGK, HLM. Joe was a long time member who was very active in the early years of the Council, having joined the Order in 1976. He served as Grand Knight during Council Year 1980-1981.
Joe was a leader in early Council activities including the Skate Board Project at Olney Manor Park and the many years the Council co-sponsored the Carnival with GOCA. He joined the Fourth Degree in 1980. Joe was a widower having lost his beloved Mary unexpectedly. Joe then moved from the Olney area to Kings Ferry, NY where he recently entered a nursing home. His funeral took place in New York with internment ceremonies at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Monday 27 June 2005.
"May his soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed through the mercy of God rest in peace."
