DISTRICT DEPUTY'S MESSAGE

"The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual" - "Vince Lombardi"

The Columbus Day Ball is fast approaching and you will need to get your reservation in quickly. The date will be October 8, 2005. As I co-chaired this event for the State for two years, I know that the room fills up quickly. The hall will only hold 800 people and we had to turn away many Knights. See your Council chairman or Grand Knight soon. The cost is $35.00 per person and it will be at the La Fountain Blue in Glenn Burnie. Don't forget the Columbus Day Parade in Baltimore on October 9th. It's a time to show your Councils Color. I have marched in this parade for many years in both the Color Corps and just as a Knight. Let's have a good showing from the Councils in Montgomery County.

"The Tootsie Rolls are here". By now, each Council should have appointed a Tootsie Roll Chairman. This Chairman should have started setting up sites and started calling members to man these sites. This is an event that every member can take part in. It's only a few hours of fraternalism. If you cannot stand for those few hours, make a small donation to your Council's fund.

All Grand Knights and Council Chairmen should be working on the first quarter reports. The new forms can be found on the State web site "Only use the forms from the "State web site not Supreme". If needed, I will make copies for those of you that do not have access to the web. October 8, 2005 is the date that these forms must be turned into me.

Please remember in your prayers the victims of September 11th and please pray for our Troops and peace.

Kevin L. Jeffords, District Deputy #11

FRATERNAL BENEFITS

BACK TO SCHOOL

Is there anyone out there who has not noticed the absence of children on the streets during the day? No question about it, school has reopened. Never before has more emphasis been placed on school costs - and how to pay for them. Sure, the Order has a scholarship program and a student loan program and our Swift-Matthews Educational Trust Fund does answer particular needs. But most still must borrow money from banks in order to finance a college education for their sons or daughters.

Costs, of course, are up. This comes as no great surprise. In fact, while most people loudly protest increases in food prices, taxes and costs of other services, seldom do they oppose increases in the cost of education. Most parents seem to view college costs as an investment. They are investing money in their children's future. It has been definitely established that college graduates earn, on the average, from 1 1/2 to two times as much as non-college grads. Perhaps this is the reason why costs are so infrequently questioned.

Wise members prepare for these expenses by planning for them in advance. I can tell you of a plan specifically designed with college in mind. It enables you to plan, in advance, for your child's college bills. It guarantees that if your child has the desire, the ambition, and the drive, he or she will also have the money. Moreover, it has a feature that no other financial institution can offer. If you die, the money you had planned to save will still be there.

Call me today to discuss these needs. I want to hear from you.

Fraternally,
Rick Morin 301.384.7627

FATHER CANICE TREACY 2005 MEMORIAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

On Wednesday, June 22, 2005, our Council held its final meeting of the 2004/2005 year and awarded scholarships of $1,000 each to three worthy recipients. This year's scholarship recipients were chosen from among 12 applicants. Council #6793 has held a scholarship program for over 16 years. In 2004, the scholarship fund was renamed in honor of the late Father Canice Treacy of St. Peter's Catholic Church here in Olney.

A sumptuous buffet of hors d'oeuvres, desserts, and soft drinks was provided for the 55-plus attendees, complements of our Past Grand Knight Innocent P. d'Almeida. The event was held in the nicely appointed dining room of the Marian's Assisted Living Center on Georgia Avenue. The evening's event included the drawing of the three (3) winning tickets for the Council's Spring Raffle.

Here's a look at the scholarship recipients. Ms. Hannah W. Blauvelt is a graduate of Rockville High School and plans to attend Loyola College, Maryland to pursue a degree in education. Ms. Kaitlin MacDonald is a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Cross and plans to attend St. Francis University, Pennsylvania to pursue a degree in physical therapy. In October, the Council will kick off the 2005 Tootsie Roll campaign. Last year the Council collected over $6000 in support of some 20 organizations helping the mentally challenged in Montgomery County. We are hoping to collect $7000 this year. But we cannot do it without your support and involvement. Once again, as in the past, we are looking for volunteers to spread the word hand out tootsie rolls and collect money for this extraordinary campaign. We will again be present at the Giant, Safeway and County liquor store in Olney and the Giant and County liquor store in Leisure World.

To volunteer, 2 hours of your time, please contact Jack Giacalone at 301 774 6338 or jgiacal@gmail.net Thank You!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TO ESTABLISH COUNCILS IN POLAND

Vote by Board of Directors Will Lead to First European Councils

Procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the streets of Warsaw

Fourth Degree Knights lead the procession of the
Blessed Sacrament through the streets of Warsaw.

The Knights of Columbus will establish councils in Europe for the first time ever, when it begins accepting members in Poland later this year, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson announced Tuesday, Aug. 2.

The 1.7 million members of the Knights of Columbus are currently established in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, the Philippines, Guam and Saipan.

Speaking to the assembled delegates at the 123rd annual Supreme Council meeting in Chicago, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson noted: "Cardinal [Józef] Glemp, Cardinal [Francizek] Macharski of Krakow and Archbishop [Stanislaw]Dziwisz of Krakow have invited us to bring the Knights of Columbus to Poland. Yesterday, our board of directors voted that we should do so."

The establishment of councils in Poland will be the first for the Knights of Columbus in Europe. It was 100 years ago, in 1905, that councils were first established in Mexico and the Philippines.

Anderson also praised Poland as the most appropriate place for the Knights of Columbus to enter Europe: "It is a country where the Catholic faith is strong, and it stands out in a Europe where religious practice has been in decline," he said.

In June 2005, the Knights of Columbus provided an honor guard for the Eucharistic Congress in Warsaw at the invitation of Cardinal Glemp, the archbishop of Warsaw. Archbishop Dziwisz is to be installed as archbishop of Krakow on Aug. 27, succeeding Cardinal Macharski. Over the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated $1.174 billion to charity, and provided in excess of 560 million hours of volunteer effort in support of charitable causes.

The Knights of Columbus is making a significant contribution to the World Youth Day events in Cologne Aug. 16-21, providing funding for economically disadvantaged participants, sending a delegation to the event, printing literature for distribution at the events and funding the performance of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis at Cologne Catheral in honor of Benedict XVI prior to World Youth Day.
