AND THE GRAND KNIGHT SAID.....
The Grand Knight said, "Take me out to the ball game." So we did! This past Labor Day, he went to Camden Yards to be with 21,000 of his closest friends. The purpose of this excursion was two-fold; to generate funds for council activities, and to evaluate the performance of the Grand Knight under severe duress.
I am pleased to report that the results of both were acceptable. At this time we are not able to provide an accurate amount of dollars earned, but we know our efforts were worthwhile. There are a few participants, however, who have sworn off hot dogs and ice cream sprinkles for the rest of their lives. You can view photos of this motley crew on the council's web page. As you can see, they look pretty normal and they invite you to join them when we descend on Camden Yards next year.
As for the Grand Knight, or what is left of him, I believe we have found another 'Iron Man". This was our first attempt to man a concession stand without any outside help. Goods news, nobody died! The team worked very hard and the GK performed his duties as only he could do. One beer plus two beers equals? That story is for another time. Many thanks to Grand Knight Jack and the entire team, who gave up their holiday to raise funds that will enable Father Peter Paul Maher Council to continue its tradition of service to those less fortunate. ONE NATION UNDER GOD!!!

In the first quarter of this fraternal year our Councils have been very busy and we are heavy into the car raffle and mentally handicapped program.
With Columbus Day we have the Columbus Day Ball at La Fountaine Bleu in Glen Burnie on October 8th and Shirley and I look forward to seeing you there. You can ask your Grand Knight for tickets which are $35 per person. Don't forget the Columbus Day Parade on the 9th starting in the Inner Harbor. I have gone to this parade several times and it's great fun and a way to show your Council colors.

TOOTSIE ROLL CAMPAIGN
This month, Fr Peter Paul Maher Council will kick off the 2005 Tootsie Roll campaign. Last year the Council collected over $6000 in support of some 20 organizations helping the mentally challenged in Montgomery County. We are hoping to exceed that number this year. But we cannot do it without your support and involvement. Once again, as in the past, we are looking for volunteers to spread the word, hand out tootsie rolls and collect donations for this extraordinary campaign. We will again be present at the Giant, Safeway and County liquor store in Olney and the Giant and County liquor store in Leisure World. To view the volunteer schedule, please sign on to our web site www.kofc6793.org and select Volunteer Schedule on the top right corner.
To volunteer just 2 hours of your time, contact the name listed in the highlighted area of the schedule. Make it a family activity: spouses and children are welcome to participate. Please.... help us help!
Here is a list of the organizations that received grants last year.

HEALTH FOR K OF C MEMBERSHIP LONGEVITY
by Bill Gulban
Why Supplements are Taken. When it comes to obtaining the vitamins and minerals your body needs, your best possible source is food. Eating a richly varied diet-including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes-is the most natural, most enjoyable, and the tastiest way known to meet your nutritional needs. Scientists are increasingly recognizing that, in addition to vitamins and minerals, there are other compounds found in foods-such as fiber and phytochemicals-that serve as powerful preventive agents, protecting your body against cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions. It's hard to replicate in a pill or capsule the exact substances and combinations that nature has already placed in food.
There are times, though, when a good diet may not be good enough. As evidence mounts, many experts have moved away from thinking of vitamins and minerals primarily as substances needed to prevent deficiency diseases (which are rare these days) and are acknowledging their broader role in promoting optimum health. Researchers are finding that some important vitamins and minerals (vitamin E, for instance) are hard to get in amounts considered protective against disease through diet alone, no matter how conscientious an eater you are. That's perhaps the main reason why supplements are taken faithfully by doctors and their patients to obtain certain vitamins and minerals on a regular basis. Most supplements are fairly inexpensive and it is alright to buy cheaper versions as long as they meet the dosage and formulation guidelines spelled out later in this article.
Supplements are by no means substitutes for eating well; you still need to make smart food choices. Supplements ought to be part of an overall health strategy to optimize your body's own natural healing potential, including eating well, exercising regularly, managing stress, not smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption. Making these and other lifestyle changes now, health can be ensured for many years to come. There are recommendations by doctors to take amounts of vitamins and minerals on a daily basis. There's no need to take more than the amounts suggested, since more is not necessarily better and some (such as selenium) may even be harmful. For some people , a daily multi-vitamin with minerals may be more convenient than taking numerous pills, and it is recommended by doctors that it is better than nothing at all. Often doctors refer to a standard antioxidant regimen. Simply, antioxidants help safeguard your immune system, retard aging, and protect against cancer. An antioxidant regimen is comprised of vitamin A ( mixed with carotenoids), C. and E and the mineral selenium. Often antioxidants are taken at different times throughout the day to optimize absorption and effectiveness. In addition, research has shown individual antioxidants are taken to prevent specific conditions, including cardiovascular disease, cataracts, and macular degeneration, the primary cause of vision loss among older adults.
Because of space in this newsletter this article will be continued in the December issue. It will cover the latest research on recommended dosages of daily supplements related to natural foods.

COUNCIL FAMILY PICNIC REPORT
The Olney Knights of Columbus Council 6793 members, family and friends held their Annual Picnic on September 11, 2005, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on the Saint Patrick's Parish lawn.
The picnic was not well attended due to strong competition from the Redskins opener and Grandparents day. Those that participated enjoyed grilled chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs along with some great salads and deserts brought by our Picnic-goers.
The council provided a Moon bounce and craft table for the kids. The highlight of the children's games was a whipped cream pie eating contest. The winner had to eat their way through the whipped cream, chew a piece of bubble gum and blow a bubble.
The adults had their own Pie-eating contest as well. The Grand Knight, and several brother knights ate through the selection of pies.
Thanks to all who helped out and provided food, games, transport and cooking.
ORDER WILL APPEAL RULING ON PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
The Knights of Columbus, which is among the defendants in Newdow v. Congress of the United States, et al., will immediately appeal the Sept. 14 decision by U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Karlton, holding that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in school is unconstitutional.
Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said that "if freedom of religion in America means anything at all, it means that it's just as constitutional to recite the Pledge of Allegiance -- complete with the words "under God" -- as it is to read aloud the Declaration of Independence. They both express the same truth: that our fundamental rights come from God, our creator, and not from government. To suggest that the language of the First Amendment prohibits the simple statement of that truth is to stand the constitution on its head."
The Knights of Columbus was instrumental in persuading Congress to insert the words "under God" in the Pledge in 1954.
When Newdow's previous lawsuit was heard by the Supreme Court last year, the Knights of Columbus weighed in on the case as a "friend of the court." This year, when Newdow filed a new lawsuit, the Knights asked the court to permit it to join the case as a defendant, and the request was granted. The Knights of Columbus is represented in the case by The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a public interest law firm that protects the religious freedom of people of all faiths.
NEWS FROM SUPREME
Knights See Donations to Katrina Relief Fund
Local Units Contribute Nearly $500,000 to Katrina Relief Fund -- Local units have contributed $448,189 to the Knights of Columbus Katrina Relief Fund in addition to the $2.5 million previously committed by the Supreme Council. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson has challenged local units to meet or exceed that commitment by donating to the Katrina Relief Fund of Knights of Columbus Charities.
"We are asking all of our councils and assemblies in the United States and Canada to become active in this relief effort either through cash donations or volunteer efforts," said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. "We are also asking our members to support the collection appeal of the United States Council of Catholic Bishops, and are looking into the possibility of establishing a job bank for those displaced."
Many Knights in local councils near the affected areas are volunteering their homes, council halls, and personal time and supplies to those affected. These efforts, local and national, will expand in the days ahead.
One hundred percent of contributions will go directly to hurricane relief, and all donations to Knights of Columbus Charities are tax-deductible (tax creditable in Canada).
The Knights have nearly 50,000 members in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. Of those about one-third have life insurance through the Order.
The Knights of Columbus has also announced that it will be suspending lapses of policies and premium notices in FEMA-designated disaster areas for at least 60 days. Knights of Columbus Insurance is ranked by Fortune Magazine as one of the largest providers of life insurance in the country with over $54 billion of top rated life insurance in force.
FR. MAHER COUNCIL RESPONSE TO KATRINA
Fr Peter Paul Maher Council will donate $250 to the Supreme Council's Katrina Fund. In addition the council will donate its portion of the 50/50 raffle collected at Business meetings thru 12/31. Remember, the more members that attend the meeting the higher the contribution will be. So come on down to the meeting, meet some old friends and find out what's going on in the council. Meeting dates are: October 12th, November 9th, and December 14th. We are still meeting at the cottage in front of the Marian assisted living center off Georgia Ave in Brookville.
FATHER MAHER COUNCIL LIVING ROSARY
This year's "Living Rosary" service will be conducted at St. Peter's Grotto of our Blessed Mother Mary immediately after the 6 p.m. mass at St. Peter's on Saturday, October 15, 2005. This is an annual activity, which the K of C alternates between St. Peter's and St. Patrick's churches. This is an opportunity for our Brother Knights to bring the whole family to honor the Blessed Mother by reciting the rosary in a truly unique and inspiring way.

Dinner Dance Silent Auction Update
|
|
![]() |
For the third consecutive month I must report that response to our June mailing for donations from the business community has been good. There will be many interesting items up for auction on October 22nd. Response to our July and August mailing for donations from our Council members has been less than we expected. We have only received a few donations from our members as of this printing. Please remember that the Dinner Dance Silent Auction is the Council's primary fund raiser for the year, and we need your help to make it a success.
So we now turn our attention to ticket sales. Ticket sales have also been slow; to date we have sold 22 tickets. We need to sell 150 tickets for this to be successful and to continue to support our Council's programs for the balance of the fraternal year which ends June 30, 2006. Please call Pat Moore today at 301 774 9260 to purchase your tickets at $27 per person. Seating is limited so buy your tickets NOW. Remember your ticket buys a great catered dinner, open bar for beer and wine, dancing to a DJ and a silent auction which is offering some great items waiting your bid. Tables seat 8, so call your friends, get a babysitter and get ready to enjoy a great evening of great food great music and support a great cause. Thank you in advance for your support.
DINNER DANCE SILENT AUCTION DATE CHANGE TO OCTOBER 22, 2005
St Andrew Kim Parish has recently completed construction of and elementary school next to the Church and Parish Center. A request was made to Cardinal McCarrick's office to schedule a date for the dedication of the new school. The date is October 16th. Fr Lee, Pastor at St Andrew Kim, informed us that they will need the use of McCarrick Hall on October 15th, the day of our Dinner Dance, to set up and prepare for the dedication ceremony on the 16th.
So the Dinner Dance has been moved to the following Saturday, October 22, 2005 at 6PM
We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope that you will still be able to join us on October 22.
