Grand Knight's Message

My Mid Term Inspiration

On Saturday, January 7th, Harry Bushar, his wife Grace, Phyllis and I attended the annual State mid-term meeting at Cardinal Gibbons Council in Baltimore. While the ladies enjoyed an afternoon of shopping, lunch and a play (the Sound of Music I think) the Grand Knights and Deputy Grand Knights sat through a barrage of presentations from the various state committees, on the state of the State. Other than the fact that the State (councils) is behind in recruitment through December '05, it appears we are in pretty good shape. The meeting concluded with mass at 5 pm followed by dinner and a guest speaker with dessert.

All in all it was a good day, and I came away with some new ideas and a new found enthusiasm for the 2nd half of my term as Grand Knight. Of all the presentations we sat through that day it was the words that our own Joe Feakes spoke that stayed with me and gave me pause. In Joe's presentation he mentioned that "you don't join the Knights of Columbus like you would join a record club or a book club, you become a 'Member' of the Knights of Columbus." How right he is. Being a Knight should not be sitting around waiting for something to happen. Being a Knight is all about making things happen. Being a Knight is not always easy and sometimes requires some sacrifice, some inspiration and some perspiration. Being a Knight is being proud of what you have accomplished and being a Knight is feeling the excitement about what you have yet to do -- Jack Giacalone

Basketball Free Throw

On Sunday, January 15, the Council held its annual Basketball Free Throw competition at Longwood Recreation center. The purpose of the competition is to make as many baskets as you can out of 15 attempts. The competition was tough and there were several shoot-outs to break ties in the 1st round. In spite of the heated competition 3 winners emerged.

Ben Warnquist - Boys 12-14 year old group
Abigail Incangelo - Girls 12-14 year old group
Keleigh Ramos - Girls 10-11 year old group

The winners will be invited to compete at the District level and, if successful, move on to the State championships in February.

District Deputy's Message

by Kevin Jeffords, DD

Membership is the lifeline to all councils. If we don't recruit new members into our order, our councils will fade away. Keep your council active. During the month of February, councils are encouraged to target those men who were once members of the Order but who left for one reason or another. Every council should consider inviting their former members and their families to an Open House specifically for them, showing them that the council still has a place for them. It is well within our reach to accomplish a goal if every council brings back at least five members. This is also the time for every council to prepare for the April Recruitment Blitz by ordering materials, contacting the Pastors of the parishes and publicizing their councils in the parish bulletins. Please keep me informed of your progress.

All councils are urged to host a BLUE MASS to honor law enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics in February.

The Maryland State Duckpin Bowling Tournament is just around the corner; Sunday, March 5th. If your council has a team, please contact Bryan Adamczk at 301-428-3379 or email SMCHawk13@hotmail.com.

The 2006 Cardinal's Charity Ball to benefit the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute will be held Saturday April 22, 2006 at the Grand Ballroom of the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, DC. The Cost is $45.00 per person. Please see your Grand Knight for more information.

The convention will be held from May 19th through the 21st at the Princess Royale Oceanfront Resort in Ocean City, Maryland. The deadline for early registration is still April 15; see your Grand Knight for registration forms.

All of the above cannot be done by the Grand Knight alone. Its up to the membership to help his council with any council activity they can. Like I said above, there is a place for YOU. Please ask your Grand Knight or any Officer what you can help with. If you cannot get hold of them, Please contact me and I will get hold of them. You are needed.

Please keep the Maryland State Charity fund in mind. Imagine what they could do if the 25,000 plus member families in Maryland who are not retired contributed just one hour's pay to the fund.

It has been one LONG year for me. And I would like to thank each and every Knight and his family for their prayers they gave me and my family during my illness. The doctors and your prayers have me on my way back to good health. I still have my days but they are now fewer.

Please remember to pray for our troops and pray your Rosary.

Hot Off The Press

McGivney BookOn January 10, 2006 a major new biography of Knights of Columbus founder Father Michael J. McGivney went on sale in bookstores throughout the country. "This book should be on every Knight's bookshelf", said supreme Knight Carl Anderson.

In light of this new book and as a tribute to Fr McGivney, Fr Peter Paul Maher Council would like to encourage its members and their families to create a short poem or a prayer in honor of Fr. McGivney. You can e-mail your submission to me at jgiacal@verizon.net prior to midnight, Sunday, April 30th.

Dick Sherbert and Carmine Amatucci will review and judge all submissions and the winner.

Good Luck...

TAX TIME AGAIN

This month, I chose to pass up the opportunity to use the old cliché about two things we must do... although the timing should certainly bring it to mind.

This season, in most homes, is financial accounting time. I'd like to wager that, at some point in the process, someone will ask (probably you!) "Where did all our money go?" Surely all of the money we earn finds a home somewhere...the grocer, the mortgage, the tax man. Very little, if any, is left over for a personal bank account or other investments. Most of us consider ourselves fortunate if we've managed to pay our bills! Folks usually save what's leftover...and for most folks, that's nothing.

The point is, whatever the amount earned, chances are good that it is spent providing for and rearing a family. Think about that for a minute. The needs of that family continue - food, shelter, clothing - even if the breadwinner suffers an untimely death.

So what does income tax have to do with insurance? Simply this...it can serve as a reminder that protection for dependents should include an estimate of the current needs for money. While it may be convenient to say "I can't afford it," that's
probably not accurate - when you consider that your family will be without any income should you die.

With this in mind, your Order has designed a plan which guarantees to continue income to your family for as long as they will need it. What's more, this plan will enable you to systematically save some of those dollars so difficult to account for at tax time.

Call me today for an appointment. I want to hear from you.

Fraternally, Rick Morin 301.384.7627

Health for K of C Membership Longevity

by Bill Gulban

This article on Why Supplements are Taken is a continuation of the last one in the October issue of Knightly News. Dr. Andrew Weil's advice based on recent research suggests that a wider range of carotenoids, an entire family of red and orange pigments related to vitamin A, may have greater cancer-protective value than beta-carotene alone. Carotenoids (also called carotenes) are in foods of these colors, such as tomatoes, cantaloupes, squashes, sweet potatoes, and carrots, as well as in dark leafy green vegetables. Taking a mixed carotenoid supplement doesn't excuse one from eating these fruits and vegetables, but it's good insurance against failing to supply your body with all the dietary carotenoids it needs. Humans lack the ability to make vitamin C and need to get it every day from dietary sources (such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, strawberries, peppers, broccoli, and leafy green vegetables such as spinach) or through supplementation. Recent research has found that the amount of vitamin C necessary for disease prevention is smaller than once thought, and therefore, 200 mg per day with meals is adequate.

Vitamin E is made up of eight different compounds, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols (in both cases called alpha, beta, gamma, and delta). Scientists believe these components are responsible for different actions in the body, from lowering cholesterol to preventing cancer. When shopping for vitamin E supplements, you'll notice that there are both natural and synthetic forms. The natural form is recommended since it is better used by the body. Adults should take 400 IU a day. Selenium is a trace mineral found in foods grown in selenium-rich soil. Because it may be difficult to determine whether the food you eat contains enough selenium to help prevent disease, it is recommended that adults take this antioxidant as a daily supplement. The recommended dose for adults is 200 mcg with vitamin E to enhance absorption. Selenium labeled "organic" which is a yeast-bound form is more readily absorbed than inorganic versions.

Other important supplements of vitamins and minerals should be taken on a daily basis, if you don't already get enough from your diet. B vitamins have been shown to reduce stroke, protect against depression, and prevent birth defects. Some B vitamins, especially vitamin B-6, B-12, and folic acid, protect against elevated levels of homocysteine, an amino acid closely linked with heart disease and Alzheimer's. Recommended dosage for adults taken with a meal is B-50 B-complex supplement that has 50 mg of some B vitamins, 400 mcg of folic acid (folate), and 50 mcg of vitamin B-12. Besides being necessary to build strong bones, calcium promotes healthy teeth and gums, helps to regulate nerve and muscle function, and prevents high blood pressure. Most American adults get only half of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (1,000 to 1,300 mg) of this mineral from food such as dairy products, sardines with bones, tofu, broccoli, kale, and calcium fortified products like orange juice and soy milk. Supplementing with calcium is a good insurance policy. Recommended dosage for women is 1,500 mg per day while men may want to get no more than 1,000 to 1,200 mg preferably from food. Vitamin D aids calcium absorption, promotes bone heath, and may play a role in the prevention of breast cancer. Recommended daily dosage to at least 1,000 IU for all adults.

The above article is supported by the noted Dr. Andrew Weil's Health Newsletter.

A Belated 'Thank You' To Those Who Worked At Inwood House Halloween Party

On Saturday, October 29, the weekend before Halloween, over 21 Brother Knights and their family members planned and enjoyed the 6th Halloween Festival for the residents, parents, and caregivers of the Inwood House. A total of 132 masquerading people took part in the festivities including a buffet dinner served by Council family members in the decorated dining room. After dinner everyone moved into the recreation room where the Magical Genie entertained the audience as they gobbled up the large bowls of witches brew and bats-blood punch.

Thanks to Mike Gormley, Director of Community Activities, who organized the team, purchased food and tableware, decorated pumpkins, and gathered some gifts. And more thanks go to Brother Joe Feakes who once again performed his well-liked master-of-ceremonies. The magician tricks by Eugene Johnson were a smashing hit.

After dessert in the dining room costume award prizes and door prizes organized by Lynn Feakes with her helpers ended a frightful and fantastic evening of good time. It is with great pleasure to name the helpers who again made this happy festivity successful. Kudos go to the Knights and their families who gave love, patience, and comfort to all residents who attended.

In particular, John & Pat Moore who trucked in the supplies, decorated rooms, prepared food & drinks, and cleaned pots & pans. Jack & Phyllis Giacalone - the cooks giving their great Italian theme. Buffet servers Lynn Feakes, her daughters with husband and boyfriend, Stephen & Marilyn Goldhammer who also decorated, and myself. Seating and serving tray helpers were Jane & Gerry Hemmingson, Innocent d'Almeida, and Bill & Roberta Homick. Punch and witches brew makers were Bill & Joan Wanatosky. Reception & ticketing were Barbara Roark, Pat Moore, and Janet Kamala. Those who donated their time making favors, goodie bags, and framing prize certificates were Barbara Roark, Bertha Padams, and Lynn Feakes. Special thanks go to Barbara Roark who gave exceptional time making & funding the favors and goody bags. Camera persons were Jim Bonanno, Lynn Feakes, and myself.

Hopefully, I didn't forget other helpers for their kind giving to this annual project; my apologies if I did.

The director of The Inwood House has repeatedly said that the Knights of Columbus Council is the only organization that totally donates their time and energy towards planning the event, completely performs the happy activity of cooking, serving food, with entertainment for the residents who look forward to the next one.
