Grand Knight’s Message

All too often it seems we get wrapped up in the business of fund raising and we sometimes forget what we are raising funds for. It occurs to me that we do not, often enough, let our members know about the little things we do, which sometimes are the most rewarding.

District Deputy's Message

by Kevin Jeffords, DD

The 2006 Cardinal’s Charity Ball to benefit the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute will be held this year on Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Loews L’Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, DC. This is the premier event that the state councils from Maryland and Washington, DC work together on to support God's special children. I am asking all councils in district # 11 to support this event. Let us work together as a team and show our support for this wonderful project.

The 2006 Maryland State convention is coming up May 19th through the 21st at the Princess Royale in Ocean City. The registration fee is $35 for members and $30 for wives and guests and the deadline for early registration is still April 15. Registrations received after April 15th will require an extra $10 per person. Your Grand Knight has applications or you can get them online. Children 17 years of age and under are free. Please name them on the registration form but do not pay for them.

Our year is not over and we need to recruit new members. Without bringing in new members our councils will not last. Gentlemen, we need to get out and set up Church recruitment drives. I said it before, if you need help, the State Membership Team will be happy to assist. Ask your Supreme Field Agent and the State Membership Team for HELP…and NOW.

Please remember to pray your Rosary and keep our troops in our prayers.

Fraternal Benefits

IT TAKES MORE THAN MONEY

Most commodities can be bought provided you 1) have the money, 2) can find a willing seller, and 3) can agree on a satisfactory price. In like manner, most investments - real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, bank accounts - require only an arm's length agreement and a deal is struck. All it takes is money.

There is one notable exception to the above statements. The purchase of life insurance. When the purchase of life insurance is considered, in addition to setting aside dollars, the prospective insured must prove that he is in good health. If a man is deemed to be "uninsurable", no amount of money will make this commodity available to him.

The ability to qualify for life insurance is an asset that is temporary at best. Without warning, your health can fail, and you may never be able to add to your life insurance program. Other hazards may prevent you from qualifying - occupation, character, even old age. What would happen if you suddenly woke up and decided to buy life insurance, but had lost your ability to qualify for it? Ever think about that?

I can tell you about our guarantee purchase option. Think about that! The ability to secure additional insurance, depending on the amount of your option, on a guarantee basis - without necessarily being in good health. This option can be added at issue of a new certificate up through age 37. Find out at your convenience how little it costs to guarantee the right to increase your protection.

Call me today for an appointment.

Fraternally,
Rick Morin 301-384-7627

Day of the Unborn Child

March 25, 2006 has been designated as the Day of the Unborn Child. I have attached a prayer card (see link below) featuring "Our Lady of the Sign" the Russian icon chosen as the image for this year's Day of the Unborn Child program. On the reverse of the card is a beautiful prayer with which Pope John Paul II concluded his great pro life encyclical, Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life).

In addition, we have copies of a new brochure entitled "Roe Reality Check" which was prepared by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities and funded by the Order. The brochure dispels common myths about abortion in our country, and provides the reader with the information needed to effectively advocate for the cause of life. Copies of the brochure are available at the cottage and can be picked up on meeting nights.

Scholarship Program in Need

In order to fund the Council's Scholarship program we have depended on receiving money from two sources. The annual Sausage and Pancake Breakfast, which provided roughly one half the funding and the Council's Car Donation Program which provided the other half. Last year we awarded four $1000 scholarships and hope to do the same this year. But as many of you know the laws regarding the amount you can claim on your income tax for a contributed vehicle changed in 2005; which caused our 2006 donations to drop by 85%. In addition, the company that handled the car donations for us is no longer in the car donation business, due to the change in the law. So we too are out of the car donation business as of July 1st.

We are now looking for a new way to fund our Scholarship program. Mark Long has taken on an effort to determine if an annual Golf Tournament might help us raise the dollars we need to continue to fund this program in 2007 and beyond. We are looking for anyone, golfer or non golfer, that can help Mark in his project. You can contact Mark directly at 301 208 7134. In addition, if anyone has any other ideas on how we can raise the money to continue the Council's Scholarship program please contact me at 301-774-6338 or jgiacal@verizon.net. Thank you

Father McGivney Prayer Contest

McGivney Book On January 10, 2006 a major new biography of Knights of Columbus founder Father Michael J. McGivney went on sale in bookstores throughout the country. "This book should be on every Knight's bookshelf," said supreme Knight Carl Anderson.

In light of this new book and as a tribute to Fr McGivney, Fr Peter Paul Maher Council would like to encourage its members and their families to create a short poem or a prayer in honor of Fr McGivney.

You can e-mail your submission to me at jgiacal@verizon.net prior to midnight, Sunday, April 30th. Dick Sherbert and Carmine Amatucci will review and judge all submissions and the winner, and their prayer or poem will be featured in the April Nightline. The winner will receive a copy of the Parish Priest. Good Luck to all...
