District Deputy's Message
by Kevin Jeffords, DD
Easter Sunday is April 16th, the day we celebrate the rising of our Lord. My wife Shirley and I and District Warden Ernest Harley and his wife Marye would like to wish each and every one of you a very Happy Easter.
As you know, I will be going in for Prostate Cancer surgery on April 6th. I will be fine and I will beat this cancer with all the Prayers and help you gave Shirley and I. I will be back in the seat in a few weeks and ready to fight the battle of Membership problems we have within a few days after I get home. I really need all of you to help me and do one last push in membership. I have pushed Membership at every meeting and District meeting we have had. Now I am asking YOU to do ONE BIG push in membership. Let's see if you can get ten or fifteen new members during the month of April. Ok, make it twenty. Twenty from our District? It can work and WE can do it. Like that guy on the Sunday night TV show always says "LETS DO IT". Was that loud enough?
The 2006 Cardinal's Charity Ball to benefit the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute will be held this year on Saturday April 22, 2006 at Loew's L'Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington DC. This is the premier event that the state councils from Maryland and Washington, DC work together on to support God's special children. I am asking all councils in district # 11 to support this event. Let us work together as a team and show our support for this wonderful project.
The 2006 Maryland State convention is coming up May 19th through the 21st at the Princess Royale in Ocean City. The registration fee is $35 for the member and $30 for wives and guests and the deadline for early registration is still April 15th. Registrations received after April 15th will require an extra $10 per person. Your Grand Knight has applications or you can get them online. Children 17 years of age and under are free. Please name them on the registration form but do not pay for them.
Please remember to pray for our troops and pray the Rosary.

GOOD ADVICE
Remember your teacher's good advice? "Always start each project with an outline. It will give you the right direction." Experience tells us that the same idea works when it comes to getting ahead on the job - or in planning for individual or family security. But, in the latter kind of planning, your outline cannot be completed alone.
Rely on the trained advice of your Knights of Columbus Insurance Agent and the Order's long and practical experience in the life insurance business to help you prepare your plans for the years ahead. I will be happy to help you chart and build a sound economic future. Better yet, I'll do it with an individual insurance plan keyed to your own needs and goals.
This sort of professional counsel is available at absolutely no obligation...just through a telephone call to me for an appointment. Today, when programming is essential to effective use of the do-everything computer, it is equally so to the fulfillment of our own dreams and hopes for our families. Life insurance programming is a service you should have...and one that I provide.

Bits And Pieces
Council Conducts Annual Charitable Fund Raising Raffle
In order to meet the budget and continue our community service and charitable programs, we need everyone's help to raise approximately $1,000. A raffle is one way for EVERY member to support the council. The raffle will be held at the final meeting of this fraternal year on June 28, 2006.
The Council will conduct a raffle for the Following Prizes: First Prize - $500.00; Second Prize - $100; Third Prize - $50. The tickets are $1.00 each.
Thanks to the support of just over 45% of the membership of the Council, last year's raffle was a success. To ALL who helped in any way, THANKS!
A letter with the raffle tickets will be sent to all Council Members in early April. Included in the mailing will be a return addressed envelope. The support of every member is needed to make the raffle a success. Thanks in advance.
Bill Kollins, Chairman. (301-774-2942)

Fr. Candice Treacy Memorial Scholarship Fund
Fr. Peter Paul Maher Council is pleased to announce that we will once again offer scholarships to deserving high school seniors who have been accepted as full time students to an accredited college or university following their senior year. Under the "Fr. Candice Treacy Memorial Scholarship Fund" any graduating high school senior (Catholic or non-Catholic) is eligible to apply for a grant under this fund, provided they live within the geographic limits of St. Peter's and St. Patrick's Churches. Students shall also be eligible if they are the child or grandchild of a member in good standing of Council 6793 or the child or grandchild of a deceased member of the Council who was in good standing at the time of his death, regardless of the applicant's place of residence.
The Council hopes to award up to $1,000 to several students. Applications and eligibility requirements may be obtained by calling Kevin Kennedy at 301-774-5014. Deadline for the applications submission is Friday, May 12, 2006. The scholarships will be awarded in June 2006.
Did You Say Golf Tournament??
The council would like to hold a Charity Golf Tournament at a local golf course to support our Scholarship Fund. The tournament would be held on a weekday, most likely Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The format would be a four-man scramble and the cost would be approximately $75 per person. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams and individuals who record the longest drive and the shot closest to the pin. Door prizes will also be given, which means we need help in obtaining donations from local businesses. The donations can be in the form of sponsoring a hole or providing advertising items, i.e. logo clothing, golf apparel, golf balls, etc. In order for this to get off the ground, we need to know that we can count on a certain number of players, so please call Marc Long and let me know if you would be willing to play or bring a team of 4 or just support us in any way, i.e., to obtain or provide donations.
You can contact me at 301-208-7134 or: ramair320_129@msn.com. Thanks.

Father McGivney Prayer Contest
On January 10, 2006 a major new biography of Knights of Columbus founder Father Michael J. McGivney went on sale in bookstores throughout the country. "This book should be on every Knight's bookshelf," said supreme Knight Carl Anderson.
In light of this new book and as a tribute to Fr McGivney, Fr Peter Paul Maher Council would like to encourage its members and their families to create a short poem or a prayer in honor of Fr McGivney.
You can e-mail your submission to me at jgiacal@verizon.net prior to midnight, Sunday, April 30th. Dick Sherbert and Carmine Amatucci will review and judge all submissions and the winner, and their prayer or poem will be featured in the April Nightline. The winner will receive a copy of the Parish Priest. Good Luck to all...
Health for K of C Membership Longevity
by Bill Gulban
Honey Claims. "Honey" is a term of endearment, a metaphor for love and lovemaking, prosperity and good fortune of all kinds. Furthermore, honey is produced by bees-industrious, fascinating creatures. Honey has long been credited with healing powers. The Bible, ancient Egyptian writings, Homer, and numerous other poets speak favorably of honey in many contexts. Its reputation is strong today, and it has attracted scientific interest. In particular, manuka honey, which comes from a bush indigenous to New Zealand, is getting lots of good press as a potential wound healer, thanks in part to researchers and promoters in that country.
Honey is a mix of sugar (primarily fructose and glucose), other carbohydrates, and water. It also contains trace amounts of such nutrients as potassium, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin C-not enough to make any difference in human nutrition. There are tiny quantities of various antioxidants with names like chrysin and galagin. In general, the darker the honey, the more antioxidants. The enzymes, acidity, and antioxidants in honey can also vary according to the pollen-clover, alfalfa, wildflowers, blueberries, fruit trees, sunflowers, and so on. The makers of manuka honey point to an active antibacterial component in some (not all) manuka honey that may promote healing when applied to burns and other wounds. Some Australian honeys claim to have the same antibacterial properties. How about eating it? Many lovers of honey believe it is more nutritious than sugar.
The national Honey Board in U.S. has funded a number of studies on the supposed nutritional benefits of honey. Some studies in New Zealand have suggested that "ounce for ounce" honey has as many antioxidants as fruit. There are problems with that idea, however. Four ounces of honey (by weight) has 340 calories (essentially empty calories); a four-ounce carrot or orange has only 40 to 50 calories, plus fiber, vitamins, and minerals (as well as a variety of beneficial phytochemicals). If you ate enough honey to get significant amounts of antioxidants, you would get way too many calories. Nutritional bottom line: If you prefer honey to other sweeteners, that fine. Like sugar, it should be used in small amounts. Manuka honey is a long way from being accepted as an antibacterial agent by doctors and hospitals in this country. It is too early to know whether manuka honey is a safe and effective treatment. Moreover, the various honey salves, creams, lip balms, and skin-care products sold in the U.S. are not standardized. You have no guarantee how much honey is in the products, or what kind. They are cosmetics, not medicine.
If you have a wound, ulcer, or burn requiring medical attention, there many tried-and true ways to fight infection and promote healing. Follow your doctor's advice. If you have a minor burn, the best treatment is ice water, or ice or cold compresses. Butter-a famous home remedy-does more harm than good. Honey is not believed to be any better.
