GRAND KNIGHT'S MESSAGE

Is Anyone Out There???

As I began my term as Grand Knight, almost a year ago, one of my goals was to try to motivate our members to become more active in our Council. In almost every Grand Knight's message I wrote, from July to May, I tried to encourage you to attend and participate in our council functions and activities or to help out or to hold one of our council positions. The response was dismal.

Most of our council functions are sparsely attended by council members and we often do not have enough people to staff the positions we need to efficiently run this Council. We have over 400 brother Knights in this council but you would not know it from attendance at our Business and Social meetings, where usually only 14 to 20 attend. Our Social meetings have provided some great guest speakers, with topics that were of current interest and should have packed the house, but the same 14 to 20, which includes some spouses, attended. I was convinced at one point that no one was bothering to even read the newsletter to know what was going on in the Council.

I often hear from Brother Knights, as I make my phone calls to try to fill positions, that "I'm too busy", but so are the dedicated group of Knights that are always here to provide the best possible example of what a council should be. In the February newsletter I wrote "Being a Knight is not always easy and sometimes requires some sacrifice, some inspiration and some perspiration. Being a Knight is being proud of what you have accomplished and being a Knight is feeling the excitement about what you have yet to do."

As you know I am seeking another term as your Grand Knight and, if elected, the message will continue and will be the same: "Get Involved." So, at this point I would like to get some input from you. What can we do to get you to become more active in our Council and what can we do better? I am anxious to hear your suggestions and would like to discuss them with you. Please call me at 301 774 6338 or e-mail me at jgiacal@verizon.net

I'm excited about the upcoming year. There's plenty to do but we need your help. So come on, catch the excitement and come grow with us.

Thank You, Jack Giacalone, your Grand Knight

FRATERNAL BENEFITS

THINKING ABOUT A VACATION

No doubt the signs of spring have had their effect on you. Initially, getting outdoors is the obvious thing to do. We start by poking around the garden, working on the lawn, attending softball practice, dusting off the gas grill.

Beneath it all we sense that vacation time is near. This pleases everyone. It doesn't matter whether we are planning an elaborate vacation or will simply enjoy the company of our family at home - the feeling is the same. Vacations are fun.

If we've planned properly, chances are that some of our hard earned dollars have been set aside for this occasion. We recognize that if we plan to spend money in the pursuit of enjoyment, the ordinary fixed expenses - mortgage, utilities, etc. - must still be paid. So you need a "vacation fund".

All of this makes good sense. The soundness of the idea is obvious. Isn't it amazing that so many of us see the wisdom of planning for our vacations each summer, but fail to plan our long range vacation - retirement. The government has thought about it and encouraged your independence at retirement age. Your place of employment has probably thought about it and planned a pension for you.

The only one left is you...it's time you thought about it. Find out how you can add to government and employer programs an amount sufficient to provide for you and yours.
After all, retirement is the longest vacation you'll ever take. Call me today and we'll plan it together.

Fraternally, Rick Morin, FICF, CSA 301 384 7627

DISTRICT DEPUTY'S MESSAGE

by Kevin Jeffords, DD

My Final District Deputy Report

There are so many people you want and have to thank at the end of your term. The first would be State Deputy Ron White and all the State Officers. I did everything I was asked to do, and a little more. I feel I will be leaving the District better than when I came in. This was done not by me, but by the great Grand Knights I had a privilege to work with in the past two years.

Let's start with Council #2169, Father Rosensteel. PGK, Peter Bonin: an old friend who helped me when I was Grand Knight. Pete, you have always been a gentleman and always will be. GK Pat Bowles: my "Grill Master" I wish you would have let me help you through your year as Grand Knight. I know we will always be friends.

Council #5547, Holy Family. PGK, Joseph Johnston: we became friends from the first meeting. Joe would call me and see how I was doing or ask a K of C question almost every other day. This was good, because he walked away with quite a few awards from the beach. To this date we still speak. GK Clarence Morris: just as with Joe, the communication line is open. I'm sure we all will be hearing from Clarence in the future.

Council #6793, Father Peter Paul Maher. PGK, Innocent d'Almeida: if there were a kinder person in the K of C, I wish someone would show him to me. Innocent was a very hard working Grand Knight and brought to light the changes that were needed at his Council. GK, Jack Giacalone: for a Knight that has only been in the K of C for such a short time, you have learned so much and done so much. I can see only good things for you in the future, if you want them.

Council #11106, St. John the Baptist. GK Michael John: another Knight that has jumped into the Order with both feet. Michael has completed two years as GK and is looking forward to being a PAST Grand Knight. A true Knight among men. I hope he is thanked for what he has done for his Council and the Order.

Council #11769, Our Lady of Vietnam GK Loi Nguyen: My Star Council. I have always enjoyed OLOVN's Installations, meetings and council functions. I hope they remember my wife and I in the future.

District Warden, Ernest Harley and his wife Marye. Shirley and I want to thank you for not only being our friends, but being there in times of need. We wish you all the best in your future in the K of C. If there is anything you need or we can do for you, please let us know.

My Brother District Deputies and all the Financial Secretaries that I harassed - you were only doing your job. The Program Directors and the hardest working man in the State. State Membership Director, Dan Ward who was out driving every night helping Councils, Districts, the State and the Order. You got our respect, friendship and thanks.

Special thanks to All our Newsletter Editors, whom without YOU, none of this would be read or published each and every month.

There is one person I need to thank, my wife Shirley. She kept me going during all the highs and lows. She was the pillar that got me through my encephalitis and just this year my bout with prostate cancer, which is now in remission. Thanks to the LOVE of a good wife, family and the many, many Prayers of all my brother Knights and their families that got me through the worst two years of health in my life. I'm now feeling great, have a great attitude and know with God's help I will beat this Cancer and live a good and full life.

I started my term with quotes form Vince Lombardi and would like to end with one.

"I firmly believe that any man's finest hours, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle---VICTORIOUS"

It was an honor serving the State and you as your District Deputy.

Please remember to keep our Troops in your Prayers and please continue to Pray the Rosary.

COUNCIL CONDUCTS ANNUAL CHARITABLE FUND RAISING RAFFLE

In order to meet the budget and continue our community service and charitable programs, we need everyone's help to raise approximately $1,000. A raffle is one way for EVERY member to support the council. The raffle will be held at the final meeting of this fraternal year on June 28, 2006, which will be a Pot Luck Dinner beginning at 7 pm at St. Patrick's Parish Center.

The Council will conduct a raffle for the Following Prizes: First Prize - $500.00; Second Prize - $100; Third Prize - $50.

Thanks to the support of just over 45% of the membership of the Council, last year's raffle was a success. To ALL who helped in any way, THANKS!

A letter with the raffle tickets was sent to all Council Members in early April. Included in the mailing were three $5 tickets and a return addressed envelope. The support of every member is needed to make the raffle a success.

Thanks in advance.

Bill Kollins, Chairman. (301-774-2942)

PLEASE REMEMBER:
THE FIRST PRINCIPLE OF OUR ORDER IS CHARITY

Did you say GOLF Tournament??

There was "0" response to the notice below that appeared in the last two newsletters.

I know we have plenty of Golfers out there. WHERE ARE YOU!!!

I'm publishing this one more time. The council received 26 applications for Scholarships this year...there is a need and we want to be there to help...... do you??

The council would like to hold a Charity Golf Tournament at a local golf course to support our Scholarship Fund.

The tournament would be held on a weekday, most likely Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday (currently set for October 4th). The format will be a four-man scramble and the cost will be approximately $75 per person. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams and individuals who record the longest drive and closest to the pin. Door prizes will also be given, which means we need help in obtaining donations from local businesses. The donations can be in the form of sponsoring a hole or providing advertising items, i.e. logo clothing, golf apparel, golf balls, etc. In order for this to get off the ground, we need to know that we can count on a certain number of players, so please call Marc Long and let me know if you would be willing to play or bring a team of 4 or just support us in any way, i.e., to obtain or provide donations.

You can contact me at 301-208-7134 or ramair320_129@msn.com and Thanks.

Fr. McGivney Prayer Contest Winner!

In February we announced the Fr. McGivney prayer contest and encouraged Brother Knights and their families to create a short poem or prayer in honor of Fr. McGivney. Dick Sherbert reviewed all 4 submissions and Gerry's was the winner. Congratulations to Gerry, as he will receive a copy of Father McGivney's biography 'Parish Priest'. Thanks to everyone who participated. Below is the winning submission:

PRAYER FOR FATHER MCGIVNEY

By Gerry Hemmingson

Heavenly Father, thank you for all the good things you
give us to help us live lives worthy of your love and grace.

Thank you for giving us and the world the man Father
Michael J. McGivney as a model for coming together to improve
the lives of Catholic men, women, and children in our midst.

Through the life of Father McGivney and his institution of the
Knights of Columbus, we are inspired to be more active members
of the body of Christ, to work in our communities to help those
who can't help themselves and to show our families and neighbors
what it means to be a Catholic man in today's world.

The vision of Father McGivney enabled the men he knew to help each
other and to join together to become a force bigger than themselves.
We borrow that vision today to serve as a beacon for all of us to follow;
to walk in a united path to become what God wants his children to be
and towards helping us to live more Christ-like lives.

We thank you for giving us the blessing of Father McGivney on this
earth and beseech you to help us live good and useful lives.

In Jesus' name we pray. Amen
