Grand Knight's Message
A Star is Re-Born
It has been several years since our council has been a "Star Council"; the most prestigious award that a council can achieve. From 1977 to 2002, Fr Peter Paul Maher Council attained Star Council for 25 consecutive years and it's time to begin another 25. A Star Council Award is the attainment of the Father McGivney Award for membership growth, the Founders Award for insurance membership growth and the Columbian Award for service programs.
The Father McGivney Award is awarded to councils that achieve a 5% gain in membership for the fraternal year. For our council, for fraternal year 2006-07, we need to gain 17 new members to achieve that goal.
The Founders Award is presented when a council meets or exceeds a 2.5% net gain in insurance members, or 9 for our council.
The Columbian Award is awarded to councils that conduct at least four activities in each of the five service areas: Church, Community, Council, Family, and Youth.
Star Council is not an award that is attainable without the participation of every council member. We ask all our brother knights to simply ask your neighbor, friend, or coworker "Would you like to become a member of the Knights of Columbus" and hand them a Form 100. The activities portion of the award, Columbian Award, also needs your participation. Simply put, the more brother knights that are active in the council the more programs we will be able to conduct. So if you want more information on recruiting a new member or want to give us some help on a program please give me a call at 301 774 6338.
Thank You and "COME GROW WITH US"
Thank You, Jack Giacalone, your Grand Knight
Meet Our New Chaplain
Fr. Louis A. Tou has agreed to become our council chaplain for fraternal year 2006-2007. Fr. Tou is retired and resides at O'Boyle residence in Washington DC. Fr. Tou is a fourth degree Knight and we are delighted he has accepted our invitation to be our chaplain.
Fr. Tou prepared a short bio for us....
Dear Grand Knight:
I was born on the 24th of July, 1930, to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Tou in a small town called Chu-ma-tien Henan Province, China. My parents were poor; but were very devoted Catholics.
In 1950 I was sent to St. Camillon's Seminary, Avila, Spain, to study philosophy. In 1953 I was selected to go to Rome for 4 years of Theology.
By the grace of God, I was ordained a priest on December 22, 1956, by Archbishop Joseph Sigismondi, Prefect of The Congregation of Propagation of Faith at Rome, Italy.
In 1957 my Bishop, Joseph Yuen, was a refugee and in exile from China living in Marion, Pennsylvania. Bishop Yuen asked me to join him in the United States, which I did. Bishop Yuen died in 1968.
In 1974 I received a Ph.D. degree from C.U.A.. I taught at Good Counsel College Prep, High School. I am the founding pastor of Our Lady of China Pastoral Mission for Chinese Catholics who live in the Archdiocese of Washington.
In 2000 I officially retired.
Grand Knight Jack Giacalone and Brother Knight Homer Chen asked me to be the chaplain of the Council. With the Grace of God, I accepted it. Thank you!
Thank you Fr. Tou, we look forward to your spiritual guidance in the months to come.
Fraternal Benefits
K of C CARE - Long Term Care Insurance
The Knights of Columbus believes in helping you keep your promises. That's why we've introduced K of C CARE- Long Term Care Insurance.
Long-term care services can devastate a family's finances and seriously deplete funds you've saved for retirement, or for your heirs.
Fortunately, there is a way to help avoid this from happening.
Including the Knights of Columbus Long Term Care program as part of your estate planning package is like bubble wrap for your nest egg.
Please call me to set up a meeting and learn about this great product from the Knights of Columbus!
Fraternally, Rick Morin, FICF, CSA Your K of C Insurance Agent (301) 384 7627

Dinner Dance And Auction Donations Needed
Your donations and participation are crucial to the success of our auction. If you, your family, or your employer would consider making a donation to support this annual fundraising event, it would be greatly appreciated. Baskets of any kind, such as sporting event or theater tickets, vacation time share, etc. are much needed and appreciated.
We are also looking for individual items that will make up a basket, such as wine, children's toys, children's books, kitchen utensils, candles, or any other type of basket that you can think of. To put those items together and create a basket, the council will be holding a basket-making party on Saturday, August 19th, at 9 am, at the cottage. Bagels, donuts and coffee will be served; and if we are still there by lunchtime we'll get some pizza. Spouses are absolutely invited to participate. Please help us out with your donation, we really need your help.
If you want to make a donation or if you're planning to participate in the basket-making party, please contact Joe Feakes TODAY at
301-774-0137.
Thanking you in advance for your support....
Celebration of Our Partnership

The Kennedy Institute has been supported by the Knight's of Columbus for over 46 years and by our council for 30+ years. In celebration of our Council's long association with the Kennedy Institute, our July 26th social meeting will feature Dr. Rebecca Salon, PhD who will update us on current activities at the Kennedy Institute. Dr. Salon, is the Director of the Kennedy Institute of Catholic Community Services serving over 500 children and adults daily throughout the Archdiocese of Washington. This includes her work in schools to promote awareness of children and adults with disabilities. Please remember to attend this important social meeting on Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at 8:00 pm. Refreshments will be served.
Knight of the Year
At the July business meeting Grand Knight Jack Giacalone presented the Knight of the Year award to Bob Caron, the Council's financial secretary. The Grand Knight stated in his presentation:
This award goes to a person that has relentless dedication and determination, uncanny insight and knowledge of the rules of our organization. A person I counted on for honest and unbiased advice and counsel, and he is always willing to give it. A person I spent many nights with commiserating, coordinating and planning next moves or simply how to get it done.
The person solely responsible for implementing the Supreme FSPC to make us AUTOMATABLE, then working countless hours gathering, verifying and implementing all of the data required to automate our council while conducting timely council business and responding to the many requests from me.....
Congratulations Bob!!
