Tootsie Roll Campaign
This month, Fr Peter Paul Maher Council will kick off the 2006 Tootsie Roll campaign. Last year the Council collected over $7,200 to help support 22 organizations helping the mentally challenged in Montgomery County. We are hoping to exceed that number this year. But we cannot do it without your support and involvement. Once again, as in the past, we are looking for volunteers to spread the word, hand out tootsie rolls and collect donations for this extraordinary campaign. We will again be present at the Giant, Safeway and County liquor store in Olney and the Giant and County liquor store in Leisure World. To view the volunteer schedule, please sign on to our web site www.kofc6793.org and select "2006 Schedule" on the top right corner. To volunteer just 2 hours of your time, contact the name listed in the highlighted area of the schedule. In addition, our brother knights will be calling you to ask for your participation.
Make it a family activity: spouses and children are welcome to participate. So Please.... help us help! and thank you.

Chaplain's Message
The Mystery of the Cross
"Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free. You are the Savior of the world." (Liturgy of the Eucharist) Jesus said: If anyone wants to come with me...he must forget himself, carry his cross, and follow me.
Through the Christian history, there have been many interpretations of what the cross means for those who follow Jesus. Some have claimed that the perfect imitation of Jesus' cross would be to give one's life for Jesus by shedding one's blood-to be a martyr. There are others who say that to carry the cross means that we must take on self-denial, fasting, and rigorous penances. They say that spiritual perfection lies in seeking out suffering. Still others say that to take up the cross in life is to accept and offer up the tragedies and sufferings of life as the will of God.
As a Worthy Knight of Columbus, what do you say about the mystery of the Holy Cross of our Redeemer?
Fr. Louis A. Tou
District Deputy Message
by Ernest Harley, DD
In a Homily, at the World Youth Conference, our Holy Father John Paul II spoke to the revelation of the universality of Jesus Christ. That everyone is called to share in God's Life, thanks to the Death and Resurrection of Christ.
So it is with the Brotherhood of the Knights of Columbus, more and more we are seeing men entering the Order alongside their fellow Knights to celebrate the precepts of the Knights of Columbus; God's love.
The changes have a profound effect on the way many of the men see themselves. One result is the effort put forth by the men in the various Councils, in their participation in the volunteer programs of the Council.
Nowhere is this spirit more apparent than to see the number of Knights returning each Fraternal Year to work in the various programs of the Councils without the slightest prodding from the Program Manager. They come and go without notice.
Their work in the Council follows traditional patterns, instantly familiar to the membership, for so little needs to be changed. What a wonderful commentary to be used as a recruitment tool to encourage others to become members of the Knights of Columbus. The lack of new members not only reduces the strength of the Council, but gives credence to the fact that word, concerning the deeds of the existing membership, is not being told.
I am happy to see that the membership recruitments in District 11 have a great start by all of the Councils, for active recruitment during the Blitz period September 2 through October 8, 2006. Keep up with the momentum, for every Council in the District has the capability to obtain Star Council this Fraternal Year. What a tremendous feeling at Convention time, walking to the platform and receiving the Plaque that says, your Council has done a great job.

Fraternal Benefits
90 Knights of Columbus field agents are members of the Million Dollar Round Table, the leading association of life insurance and financial services professionals. The MDRT Code of Ethics calls for member agents to "always place the interests of their clients above their own interests," and to "give the best possible advice to clients by seeking to maintain and improve professional knowledge, skills and competence." MDRT expects of their members exactly what you expect of your agent - exemplary sales practices...outstanding service...high ethical standards.
What does this mean for you and your family? It means that I won't simply try to push a policy on you. I'll take the time to review your current coverage with you. I'll ask questions about your needs, goals and budget. I'll recommend a plan to help you meet your needs and move toward accomplishing your goals. Most importantly, I'll answer your questions. I want your purchase to be an informed one. Exemplary sales practices.
Whether or not you purchase life insurance coverage through the Order (and I hope that you do!), our relationship won't end. Things change. Things like needs, goals and budgets. What is an appropriate amount of coverage today may not be appropriate tomorrow. I'll meet with you annually to make sure you and your family remain adequately protected. Outstanding Service.
As a brother Knight, I have the best interests of you and your family at heart. I'll render that service, which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself. High ethical standards.
Give me a call. Fraternally, Rick Morin- member MDRT, Your K of C Agent

October Social Meeting - A Must For Your Financial Planning
On Thursday October 26, at St Peters, Classroom P, which is on the school side of the building, our fraternal benefits advisor Richard Morin will speak to us about Long Term Care and Medicare benefits. Two subjects that are both important and mysterious to most of us. Well, Rick will help to unravel the mystery and confusion surrounding these topics. Long Term Care planning and Medicare are not subjects to be understood only by the 55 and older crowd.
The earlier you are aware and understand these programs the better retirement financial planning decisions you will be able to make. This is such an important topic it will be open to everyone in the community.
Light refreshments will be served....Thank you
Dinner Dance And Auction Donations Needed

We are also looking for individual items that will make up a basket, such as wine, children's toys, children's books, kitchen utensils, candles, or any other type of basket that you can think of. Knight Served As Mission Specialist Aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis
|
Commander Daniel C. Burbank, 45, a 25-year member of Edmund P. Perkins Council 6626 in Tolland, Conn., served as a flight specialist on the Sept. 9-21 mission of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, STS-115. Astronauts on the mission made improvements to the International Space Station.
The six-member space shuttle crew installed a second set of solar arrays, weighing 17.5 tons, on the space station, which doubled the station's ability to generate power from sunlight. The 12-day mission had been in planning and training for four years. Commander Burbank was a member of a two-man team that made a space walk Wednesday, Sept. 13, to activate the newly installed equipment to the space station. Commander Burbank graduated from Tolland (Conn.) High School and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He received a master's degree in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. This was his second mission aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. During a 12-day mission, STS-106, in September, 2000, Commander Burbank prepared the International Space Station for its first permanent crew. Commander Burbank's father, Dan, is also a past grand knight of Council 6626. |
