Grand Knight's Message
I would like to remind our Brothers that council elections will be held at the General Business meeting on Wednesday, June 13. This process will elect the new leadership of the council for the fraternal year 2007-2008. I would encourage our Brother Knights to attend this meeting, to vote, to meet the newly elected officers, and to ask what you can do to support them as they assume their new positions.
I would also ask each of our Brother Knights to visit the Knights of Columbus, 125th Anniversary web site at www.kofc.org/un/eb/en/anniversary/index.html and read the history of the Knights of Columbus as we celebrate the 125th anniversary of our order. I think, as you read thru the chronology, from our humble beginning in 1881 to the organization we know today, you will be amazed with the scope and depth of our order and realize that we can be proud to say we are a member of the Knights of Columbus. Hope to see you on June 13 and come grow with us....
Thank You, Jack Giacalone, Grand Knight
Chaplain's Message
by Fr. Louis Tou
The Ascension of The Lord, Jesus Christ
On Thursday, May 17, 2007, the Church commemorates the event of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 40 days after the Feast of the Resurrection.
The Ascension is primarily a metaphor, reflecting an ancient deep-seated cosmology, used to express the real transcendent destiny of Jesus. It also explains the paradoxical character of the present relationship between Jesus and His Church, His supremacy over the created universe, His sending of the Holy Spirit, His role as revealer, His priesthood and the expectation of His second coming. Being the ascension of the man Jesus, it is also the basis of the hope of all humankind.
The account of Jesus' ascension in Luke (24:50-52) explains why the appearance of the risen Jesus ceased: they came to an end because Jesus, finally, entered into a new kind of existence. I will be with you until the end of the world. Therefore Jesus is in his Church; Jesus returned to His Father, Jesus is omnipresent everywhere as God!
We believe in Jesus Christ for ever and ever. Amen !
District Deputy Message
by Earnest Harley
Membership will continue to be the top priority throughout the remainder of the Fraternal Year. Each one of us can bring in at least one new member as our goal for the Fraternal Year 2006 - 2007. Together, as members of the Knights of Columbus, we can make it happen. The goal for recruitment has been established by Supreme with each Council knowing what their individual goals are, and what is needed to gain that goal, and the Star Council award given as the results of their efforts.
The Grand Knights should be completing the reports that will describe the staff serving their Councils during the coming Fraternal Year. Reports such as the Columbian Award Application, Report of Officers Chosen for the Term, and the Service Program Personnel Report. Do not wait, these reports should be completed as soon as possible and forwarded to the various offices of the Supreme with copies sent to the State Deputy, and the District Deputy.
The Maryland State Council Convention is rapidly approaching. All persons that wish to attend should have sent in their registration. However, it still not too late to register. A great time will be had by all. Come join the membership of the State and enjoy the fellowship that is the Knights of Columbus in Ocean City.
Fraternal Benefits
THINKING ABOUT A VACATION
No doubt the signs of spring have had their effect on you. Initially, getting outdoors is the obvious thing to do. We start by poking around the garden, working on the lawn, attending softball practice, dusting off the gas grill.
Beneath it all we sense that vacation time is near. This pleases everyone. It doesn't matter whether we are planning an elaborate vacation or will simply enjoy the company of our family at home - the feeling is the same. Vacations are fun.
If we've planned properly, chances are that some of our hard earned dollars have been set aside for this occasion. We recognize that if we plan to spend money in the pursuit of enjoyment, the ordinary fixed expenses - mortgage, utilities, etc. - must still be paid. So you need a "vacation fund".
All of this makes good sense. The soundness of the idea is obvious. Isn't it amazing that so many of us see the wisdom of planning for our vacations each summer, but fail to plan our long range vacation - retirement. The government has thought about it and encouraged your independence at retirement age. Your place of employment has probably thought about it and planned a pension for you.
The only one left is you ... it's time you thought about it. Find out how you can add to government and employer programs an amount sufficient to provide for you and yours.
After all, retirement is the longest vacation you'll ever take. Call me today and we'll plan it together.

Health for K of C Membership Longevity
by Bill Gulban
The truth behind fitness fallacies. Research might change the conventional wisdom about exercise, but misconceptions still linger. For instance, gaining muscular strength was once thought to slow your running speed, an idea that's since fallen by the wayside. Most women now realize they won't develop bulky muscles from lifting weights, since they typically lack enough testosterone to make this happen. Here are other fitness falsehoods.
Fallacy: Lifting a weight is what stimulates muscle growth. Lowering a weight, which lengthens a muscle, is just as important as lifting, which contracts it. Lowering a weight is when tiny tears occur; these tears trigger a remodeling process that leads to muscle growth. Bottom line: Concentrate on both movements-lifting a weight and letting it down slowly and smoothly.
Fallacy: The amount one sweats reflects your fitness level. Sweating is only one factor that might indicate if you're fit or out of shape. Besides conditioning, perspiration is also influenced by genetics, gender, temperature, and humidity, clothing and work intensity. Bottom line: As you become fitter, you actually sweat sooner, which cools you down faster.
Fallacy: Panting and sweating is necessary for a good workout. To benefit your heart, you should be breathing harder than normal, but not gasping for air. This might work up a sweat, but whether you're dripping wet or not is less important. Bottom line: Aim for a "talking pace", an intensity that allows you to have a conversation without breathing too hard.
Fallacy: Stretching reduces injury risk and muscle soreness. Stretching before a workout doesn't cut injury risk and may delay pain only temporarily. Evidence is mixed on its benefits afterward to prevent injury or put off pain. Some research has found that overall fitness is a more important factor than stretching in avoiding injury. Bottom line: Regular stretching does improve flexibility, which increases a joint's range of motion. Stretch after exercising, when muscles are warm and less apt to strain. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds to lengthen the muscle.
Fallacy: If one exercises, you need a lot of extra protein. People who work out regularly need only a little more protein than couch potatoes to rebuild muscle tissue, and it's easy to get this from food. Vegetable protein is favored, including beans, soy, and nuts, while eating fewer animal sources such as eggs, dairy, and meats, but don't give up fish. Bottom line: Active people don't need protein powders, and there's no benefit from getting more than 20 to 30 percent of your daily calories from protein.
Fallacy: Exercise helps you sleep better. Research suggests that physical activity has only modest effects in good sleepers, perhaps extending shuteye by 10 minutes in those who do an aerobic workout for less than an hour. But physical activity might help those with sleep difficulties: The mood boost and sunlight exposure that insomniacs get from exercising outdoors seem to encourage slumber, and any workout might naturally help shift circadian rhythms, the body's 24-hour cycle. Bottom line: Experiment to see if exercise influences your sleep.
