Grand Knight's Message
We finished July with a very successful barbecue for the first-ever Seminarian Family Day Picnic at St. Patrick’s parish after a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Donald Wuerl. Eleven Brothers, wives, and family members planned, purchased, cooked, and served for 135 seminarians and their family members. Our contribution to the menu consisted of chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, corn, and tomatoes. Our Council received thank you letters from Ms. Maris Moriarty, the picnic organizer, and Rev. Msgr. Robert Panke.
Next month, we will hold our annual Columbus Day Ball and the Maryland State 38th Annual Car Raffle Benefit. Please buy or sell the tickets you will receive and see me for additional tickets to buy or sell. Please help us to recruit new members and continue to “Help Us Help Others” through your enthusiastic participation in our Council’s activities.
Thank you, Harry F. Bushar, Grand Knight
Chaplain’s Message
by Father David A. Wathen
Our new Chaplain was kind enough to contribute the following short spiritual reflection for our monthly newsletter, while he was relaxing at home in Kentucky with his parents after more than two months of pilgrimages (three to the Holy Land and one to Lourdes):
'Listen to Him'
How good are you at listening to what others have to say? To listen well is a skill that requires constant discipline. This is especially true in our modern world filled with so much noise.
At the Transfiguration of Our Lord the Father is heard saying to Peter, James and John: "This is my Beloved Son, listen to him." Of all the people who have ever walked this earth we should want to listen very carefully to every word Jesus speaks. Why? In another gospel passage Peter says to Jesus: "Lord you have the words of eternal life." We hang on to every word Jesus speaks because his words give life, and they lead to eternal life.
May we all be attentive to Jesus' words and allow them to transform us more and more into his glorified likeness.
District Deputy Message
by Ernest E. Harley - District Deputy, # 11
The Supreme Membership and Recruitment Blitz is coming in October. Each Council is asked, prior to the actual blitz, to prepare a plan for accomplishing their membership requirements through their blitz efforts.
The plan should contain the times, places, and how recruitment goals will be accomplished. At the Grand Knights College and through information imparted by the District Deputy, Councils were informed of the upcoming event and methods for doing their recruitment.
Grand Knights, their membership chairmen, and committee members should establish a plan of action, that can be successfully implemented. This plan should include methods to reactivate former members, transfers, and signing of new candidates. A good start in recruiting will be an excellent start in obtaining Star Council.
Excerpted from an Email from our Worthy State Deputy, Edgar Haynes
Our Supreme Knight recently sent a letter to all District Deputies, Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries regarding the film "Bella". It is a heartwarming and inspirational film about an unwed mother and her decision to choose life. It presents a positive message about the culture of life we support as Knights.
Our Supreme Knight has asked us to help make this film a success and send a message to Hollywood that wholesome movies will be well received at the box office.

How Do Annuities Compare With Other Investments
| Feature | K of C Annuity | CD's | Mutual Funds |
| Tax-deferred | yes | no | no |
| Avoids probate | yes | no | no |
| Safety Guaranteed | yes | yes | no |
| Lifetime Income | yes | no | no |
| Liquidity | yes | yes | yes |
Which are important to you? Which make a difference to your financial well being? Annuities are growing in popularity. Why? The annuity may be used to fund an IRA (new or a rollover), save money for retirement, leave to children (avoids probate), provide a lifetime monthly income -- all these possibilities with guaranteed interest and safety. “Time is money”; tax deferral buys time. The more time you can buy, the faster and larger your assets can grow. The Knights of Columbus is a 62+ billion dollar nonprofit insurance company for Catholics with the highest possible rating given by the A. M. Best Company (A++ superior) and Standard & Poor (AAA superior).
Call your Brother Knight and council’s field agent today . . . so he can review the “ins and outs” of our Order’s outstanding Annuity Programs.

The Council Art Auction, in October is the largest fund raiser of the year. In order to maximize the fund raising capability of the event, we would like all of our members to purchase tickets and attend the auction. In addition, we would like everyone to sell additional tickets to family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. The more people we bring to the event the greater our success. This Art Auction is a great place to begin your Christmas shopping. The art work presented will suit everyone pocketbook and taste.
To help cover the cost of refreshments and supplies we will accept Patron ads to be placed in the program book. The ad is $25 and you will receive2 free tickets valued at $20. So help us make this event a huge success and buy your tickets today. Please contact me at 301 774 6338 or jgiacal@verizon.net for Patron ads, to purchase your tickets or to volunteer to help.

K of C Health Longevity
by Bill Gulban
It doesn't take long to figure out that our deceased Brother Knights or members of their families have succumbed because of cardiovascular disease, which has the highest national average death rate. My attempt in writing articles on health is to improve the health of Brother Knights and anyone else who reads them and to extend our lives so that we may keep doing the work of our mission.
Cardiovascular disease is still the number-one killer in America. It accounts for about 37% of all deaths, according to the American Heart Association.
Five Foods Proven To prevent Heart Attacks
Most of us know that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole gains and low in saturated animal fats lowers the risk of heart disease. But certain foods have been shown to be particularly beneficial. Of course, no food is a magic bullet--you still need to exercise daily and maintain a healthy weight--but eating the recommended amounts of the following can go a long way toward preventing heart disease.
Spinach. Like most fruits and vegetables, spinach is rich in vitamin and minerals. What makes spinach stand out for keeping the heart healthy is folate, one of the B vitamins. Studies have found that folate helps prevent the build up of homoscysteine, an amino acid in the blood that is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Two cups of raw spinach (about 2 ounces) has 30% of the daily value for folate-- ½ cup of cooked spinach provides 25%. Frozen and fresh spinach are both good, but beware of canned spinach--it may have excessive amounts of salt. Too much salt increases blood pressure, and high blood pressure is another major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Alternatives are asparagus where 4 spears have 20% of the DV of folate. Also, many breakfast cereals are fortified with folate--check the labels.
Salmon. Is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3s reduce inflammation and make your blood less “sticky,” which prevents plaque--fatty deposits-- from clogging your arteries. Having unclogged arteries reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. The American Heart Association recommends 2-3 ounce servings of salmon a week. Alternatives include mackerel, lake trout, sardines, herring and albacore tuna. If you don’t like fish, have 1-teaspoon of ground flaxseeds daily--sprinkle on cereal, yogurt or salads, and drink plenty of water to avoid constipation.
Tomatoes. The vegetable is loaded with lycopene, a carotenoid that gives them their color and reduces cholesterol in the body. Cooked and processed tomato products, such as juice and sauce, provide the greatest benefits. Recommended is 1-cup of tomato juice (23 milligrams (mg))or ½ cup sauce (20 mg) daily. Alternative includes 1 ½ cups of cut-up watermelon contain 9-13 mg of lycopene.
Oatmeal. This cereal is one of the best and most studied sources of soluble fiber. It absorbs water and turns to gel during digestion and absorbs excess cholesterol from the body. About 5-10 grams of fiber per day can reduce LDL (bad cholesterol) by about 5%. Recommended is 1 ½ cups of cooked oatmeal daily. Alternatives include kidney beans and brussel sprouts each have 3 grams of fiber per ½ cup.
Pomegranates. This fruit is loaded with polyphenols, an antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, which can damage the body’s cells. Polyphenols help maintain cardiovascular health by scooping up free radicals before they damage arteries. Red wine and purple grape juice are great sources of polyphenols, but pomegranates have the highest amount. Recommended is 1.5 ounces of concentrated pomegranate juice daily. Alternative include red wine (2-5 oz glasses/day for men and one for women and purple grape juice (4-6 oz/day).
