Grand Knight's Message

Tootsie Roll Campaign

This month, Fr Peter Paul Maher Council will kick off the 2007 Tootsie Roll campaign. Last year the Council collected approximately $5,500 to help support 22 organizations helping the mentally challenged in Montgomery County. We are hoping to exceed that amount this year. But, we cannot do it without your support and involvement. Once again, as in the past, we are looking for volunteers to spread the word, hand out tootsie rolls and collect donations for this extraordinary campaign. We will again be present at Giant, Safeway and the County liquor store in Olney and Giant and the County liquor store in Leisure World, on every Saturday & Sunday in October from 8 AM to 6 PM.

To volunteer a 2-hour increment of your time, please contact me, Harry Bushar at (301) 929-1425. In addition, our brother knights will be calling you to ask for your participation.

Make it a family activity: spouses and children are welcome to participate. So Please....

Chaplain’s Message

by Father David A. Wathen

The Rosary: A School of Christian Life

One of the most beautiful prayers we can include in our daily lives is the praying of the Rosary. In St. Louis de Montfort’s spiritual classic, The Secret of the Rosary, the author describes the Rosary as being "a veritable school of Christian life."

Our Blessed Mother continues to urge each one of us to rediscover the secret of the Rosary in order that we might genuinely live that Christian life to which we are called. By meditating on the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries of our faith we grow in our love for God who has given us this precious gift. As we ponder these events in the life of Mary and Jesus our prayer becomes more profound; we reflect on how they responded to God’s Word and how they sought to fulfill His will in every way and then we are strengthened in our desire to do the same.

As we pray the Rosary let us ask God to help us to live the Rosary so that we might experience for ourselves the truth of these words: "meditating on the mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may we imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise." Amen

District Deputy Message

by Ernest E. Harley - District Deputy, # 11

The summer vacation time is now over, and the Councils of the Knights of Columbus are deep into the various programs that are so beneficial to their Church communities, and to the general communities at large. With the various Installations behind us, this activity, is especially true to those Councils that make up District Eleven of the Maryland State.

First the Membership and Recruitment Blitz of each Council is in full swing. The desire is to get a head start on the number of new members, to strengthen the Council, and to fill the expectations of required members, and required insurance recruits, leading each Council to the Star Council Award. Soon the Councils will be called upon to report the result of their recruitment efforts.

The State has asked each Council to participate in the Letter writing campaign, by partnering with the members of each Parish, after each Mass urging the members of the State Legislature to support legislation “Women’s Pregnancy Support Service Program”, a strong Pro-Life effort. Each Council will identify a Knight, and other volunteers for each Parish to spearhead the effort.

The State Columbus Day Ball will take place early in the month of October. Participation in this event allows the State to gather money for their Scholarship Program.

The Tootsie Roll Program will get it’s start, late in the month of September, and through-out the month of October.

Also, early in the month of October, the reports, identifying the work of the Knights of Columbus in the various Program areas are due. These reports represent the invaluable effort by members of the Knights of Columbus, in each Council, to assist the Church, and the people of the community. The reports, written to show the concern, effort, and the success of the individuals participating in the various activities, hopefully will stand-out for that Council, in that specific program area.

Insurance Report

Who Were You?

A speaker at a meeting of top business leaders asked each to write his or her own obituary. At first each wrote about their impressive business success, how much they had achieved. But then each threw that draft away. Then, they wrote about how they really wanted to be remembered: for being a loving husband or wife, for being a terrific parent, for how much they cared for their family and friends and finally for how fair and honest they were.

In fact, each of us is writing our own obituary every day . . . What we do now is what we will be remembered for. Material success won’t count -- it’s the kind of life we live. Being a good provider is important, but it is the kind of person we are that really matters. Just being a Knight shows we care about our Family, our Church and our Country. And you know, the more active we are . . . the more it shows.

How about what happens to your family after you are gone? You can’t help wondering at the funeral if the family is going to have to struggle, or if the deceased left his family in good shape. Too many guys have some vague idea but don’t make specific plans. And some think friends, relatives or the government will take care of their loved ones. And many depend on their big group term plans; forgetting that it expires after they retire.

As a brother knight, I am trained to be of service to you. Why not take a few minutes to review your financial and life insurance plan . . . so you will be remembered for the wonderful person you really are!

Fraternally, Rick Morin, FICF/LUTCF Your K of C Insurance Agent (301) 384 7627

Excerpted from an Email from our Worthy State Deputy, Edgar Haynes:

Our Supreme Knight recently sent a letter to all District Deputies, Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries regarding the film "Bella". It is a heartwarming and inspirational film about an unwed mother and her decision to choose life. It presents a positive message about the culture of life we support as Knights.

Our Supreme Knight has asked us to help make this film a success and send a message to Hollywood that wholesome movies will be well received at the box office.

Halloween Festival At Inwood House

by Bill Gulban

On Saturday, October 27, 2007 the ghosts and witches will revisit our Council members and the residents of the Inwood House in Wheaton. This is our 8th annual celebration of our Council Halloween Festival. Invited are the Inwood House residents, their caregivers, their parents, and Council family members and guests. This year, as in years past, over 120 masquerading people attend the festivities including a pasta buffet dinner with meat balls, salad, beverage, and dessert served by Council family members in a festive decorated dining room. After dinner everyone moves into the recreation room where there is entertainment for the audience and the gobbling up of ‘witches brew’ and ‘bats blood’ punch. Costume prize awards and door prizes will make for a fantastic evening of fun for everyone.

Council members old and new are asked to volunteer their time for party setup, kitchen help, serving at the buffet table, and assisting to seat disabled residents at tables. The kickoff meeting for planning this event is scheduled on Tuesday, October 2 at 7:30 pm at the Council cottage. (It’s possible this newsletter notice may not be in time because of mail delivery time). The final planning meeting for assignments is scheduled for Tuesday, October 16 to include pumpkin and decorating and purchasing door prizes. Volunteers are asked to look through their house for some little ‘treasure items” suitable for prizes such as costume jewelry, knick-knacks, watches, etc. This small consideration would provide much happiness to the residents of Inwood House. Let us all enjoy a happy festival full of fun.
