Grand Knight's Message

by John E. Moore, Grand Knight

I was on travel for the first two weeks of August, and now it seems like the summer is almost over with the children going back to school next week. My job will have me away the first of each month until December. I want to thank Paul McFarlane for filling in admirably, and I know he will continue to do good work.

October is just around the corner and the Council will need the help of many hands, especially for the Tootsie Roll Campaign. We are going to try something different this year. Instead of four or five weekends, we will do one then five evenings and another weekend. I’m asking (really begging) for volunteers now so you will have a choice of time and day.

Please call me on (301) 774-9260 or e-mail at jem1234@verizon.net. Lets see if we can make better last year.

District Deputy Message

by John L. Durbin, District Deputy

Jesus I Trust In You

September is here, the children are back in school, the relaxing summer vacations are behind us and we look forward to our Fall Programs. September is the month for Chairmen of the ‘Surge with Service’ activities to write their reports for the first quarter of this fraternal year. The reporting period for this quarter is from 1 April 2008 through 30 September 2008. This gives our councils six months of events to report on their successes.

District activities for September and October include a first degree scheduled for September 24th at Fr. Maher Council and October 2nd at Our Lady of Guadalupe, October 7th at Montgomery and a second degree tentatively scheduled for October 18th at Montgomery (Saturday at 2:00 pm). Recruiting new members is a daily activity for all Knights in our District and first degrees are scheduled every month at one of our councils to allow us to bring them in promptly. Be active in recruiting and help our councils grow with new brother Knights that will bring fresh ideas and new programs to our councils.

State activities for October include the Columbus Day Ball on October 11th , the Columbus Day Parade in Baltimore on October 12th and Columbus Day festivities at Union Station in D.C. on the 13th. Information on all activities is available through your Grand Knight.

We are off to an exciting start in our new District #30. Our District Warden Jack Giacalone and Phyllis and Nancy and I are looking forward to enhancing our extended families by attending as many activities as we can and become part of every council that we serve.

God Bless you and your families. Vivat Jesus

Fraternal Benefits

Plan for the future. You have it pretty good right now, don’t you. Some minor worries, but nothing you can’t handle. You and your family are enjoying life. But, how long will those carefree days last? Your wife and family are your responsibility.

Have you done anything to secure their future? Have you made any provisions to insure that they are taken care of when you die? I realize that you are healthy today, and you probably feel there is no hurry to get life insurance. You can always buy it some other time, right?

Wrong! You may not be insurable tomorrow! What if something happens to you? You are left with nothing. Even worse, your family is left with nothing!

By purchasing needed life insurance today- you protect your family’s tomorrow.

Call me for an appointment.

Fraternally, Rick Morin, FICF/LUTCF Your K of C Insurance Agent (301) 384 7627

Membership News

by Homer Chen

We are in the beginning of a new fraternal year and we will have to recruit new members again.

In the month of August, we have a new transfer to our Council. Let’s welcome Rev. Fr. Joseph E. Rogers, our new priest who joined St. Patrick’s Church recently.

We will have a membership drive at both St. Peter’s and St. Patrick’s Churches on the weekend of September 14. Please volunteer to help with this effort.

A council first degree has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, at the Good Council High School.

Let’s talk to our friends, co-workers, family embers and fellow parishioners and invite them to become Brother Knights.

For membership information, please call Jack Giacalone at 301-774-6175 or Homer Chen at 301-460-0580.

Reflections

by Lawrence P. Grayson

The Four Horsemen (Part 1 of 4)

In the Book of Revelation, St. John writes in symbolic terms of the struggle between good and evil, of the conflict between the worldly Babylon and the divinity-seeking Jerusalem, of the difficulties we must contend with on earth to gain our reward of an eternity with God.

One of the metaphors St. John uses is of four men astride horses of different colors, who were released bringing devastation to the world. In a sense, America -- and indeed the West -- is faced with four apocalyptic horsemen today. The first, riding a white steed, is materialism, which holds forth the image of greater and greater happiness to be attained through things of this world. This is an alluring, but false promise. In striving for material advancement, we put total faith in our reason, ignoring higher-order spiritual truths. Science and technology become dominant tools, as man plays god, trying to remake the world and himself. The result is a famine of the transcendent. We have a superabundance of consumer goods, but do not know why we were created. We are concerned about accumulating as much money, power, prestige and status as we can, but ignore the soul. We establish laws that protect the environment, animals, and the goods we have amassed, but disregard the value of human life. Materialism has warped the meaning of our existence.

Maryland Knights of Columbus Charity Fund

Brother Knights; a reminder to remember those less fortunate then we are.

The purpose of our CHARITY FUND is "TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO INDIVIDUALS IN TEMPORARY URGENT NEED" in the name of the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS OF MARYLAND. The Fund is intended to be a "Bridge" to financial recovery and does not take on long-term cases. It is not designed to take place of the Council charity fund, but to supplement it.

All donations received are available for distribution to those in urgent financial need. Minor administrative expenses are borne by earnings on investments. REMEMBER, our FUND grows only by donations that are TAX DEDUCTIBLE from Individuals, Councils, Districts, Memorial Funds, etc. The FUND must have a sufficient financial base to allow us to continue helping those in distress.
