Grand Knight's Message
by SK Paul D. McFarlane, Grand Knight
Good Brothers and Gentle Ladies: Our Council year is off to a running start with several events that filled in between our vacations. My sincere thanks to all those who attended and assisted with the beautiful Silver Rose Program at St. Peter’s and our Council picnic (feast) at St. Patrick’s. August proves to be no less busy with each of the four (4) Councils in our District holding their Installation ceremonies. Our Installation is set for Saturday, August 29; see the calendar for details.
Please use the envelope attached to this newsletter to participate in the Maryland State Charity Fund. The present economic downturn has negatively affected many of our Brothers and their families. Lest we forget, Charity is the first principle of our Order.
Remember to carry a form 100-MD with you at all times and tenaciously seek out new members. This will grow our Order and ensure that the many acts of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism, for which we are observed and appreciated, continue well beyond our stewardship of Council 6793.
Reflections
A holy man was having a conversation with God one day and said, 'God, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.' God led the holy man to two doors.
He opened the first door and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth water. The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished.
They were holding spoons with very long handles, that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful. However, because the handles were longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. God said, 'You have seen Hell.'
They went to the next room and God opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew, which made the holy man's mouth water. The people had the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, 'I don't understand.'
It is simple,' said God. 'It requires but one skill. You see, these people have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.'

Fraternal Benefits -- A Way of Life
When was the last time you wife went shopping for the day and left you to mind the children? How would you handle this responsibility day after day, plus having to work?
When I ask this question, I find that most of our members have closed their minds to this possibility. Unfortunately, it does happen, you know. No man likes to place a monetary value on his spouse. But money is the only thing that will give you a fighting chance to keep a semblance of a home for your kids should anything happen to your wife.
Many insurance men call it “wife insurance”. I like to call it “way of life” insurance. Call me today for an appointment.

John Austin Named President of Olney Chamber of Commerce
Brother Knight, John R. Austin was recently named as the 2009-2010 president of the Olney Chamber of Commerce. He is actually a Brookeville, MD resident and is president of his own company, Austin Wealth Management, LLC. As reported in a recent Olney Gazette article, Mr. Austin, “…has big plans for the town.” He joined the Chamber three years ago and immediately became active. His background is international business and among other things, he hopes to resurrect the Sister City program with Olney, England, and establish new relationships with other international cities.
He’s quoted as saying, “We have obvious concerns, but understand the difficulties with the economy. We want to get the word out that Olney is a great place to live and do business, and we want everyone to know Olney.” In the article, Austin mentions Olney’s participation in the National Night Out, which our Council takes part in each August. Congratulations to one of our own!

Commemorating the Assumption of Mary
On Saturday, August 15th we will commemorate the solemnity of the Assumption into heaven of the Blessed Virgin, Mary. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the teaching of Mary’s Assumption as an “essential of Catholic dogma.” Let us remember our Lady in prayers and devotions. Talk to children and grandchildren about the beauty of motherhood and Mary’s examples thereof. Mary is Queen of the Knights.
Hymn: Immaculate Mary
Immaculate Mary, thy praises we sing,
Who reignest in splendor with Jesus, Our King.
Ave, ave, ave Maria! Ave, ave Maria!
In heaven the blessed thy glory proclaim;
On earth, we, thy children, invoke thy sweet name!
Ave, ave, ave Maria! Ave, ave Maria!
We pray for our mother, the Church upon earth;
And bless, dearest Lady, the land of our birth.
Ave, ave, ave Maria! Ave, ave Maria!
Council 6793 July 2009 to June 2010 Budget
The following table is the planned Council year 2009 to 2010 budget. This budget was created using the one from last year and seeks to duplicate an extremely successful 2008/2009 year, both financially and communally. This is thanks to the stewardship of our immediate past Grand Knight, John E. Moore, Sr., his fellow Officers, and the Council at large. If you have questions about this budget, contact Paul D. McFarlane, GK, Elect [301-570-5508] [pmknight6793kofc@verizon.net]. After this publication and the resolution of any feedback the budget will be voted on by the Council membership at a future Business Meeting.
