Good Brothers and Gentle Ladies: First, those who made our Council’s 2009/2010 Installation ceremony and reception a resounding success have my and my wife, Karen’s heartfelt gratitude! World Day of Prayer for Peace – Friday, September 11, 2009
Since September 11, 2004 the Knights of Columbus has called upon its members and all people of faith to recognize September 11th as the World Day of Prayer for Peace.
With you, O Mother of the Redeemer, may the hymn of the humble and the poor rise to almighty God; may He, the merciful one, bring peace to earth, reconcile brothers at enmity, confound Cain, make Abel rise again; may He bring all of creation to the design He had at the beginning in the love of the Son, in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen. – Pope John Paul II

Fraternal Benefits
BACK TO SCHOOL
Is there anyone out there who has not noticed the absence of children on the streets during the day? No question about it, school has reopened. Never before has more emphasis been placed on school costs - and how to pay for them. Sure, the Order has a scholarship program and a student loan program and our Swift-Matthews Educational Trust Fund does answer particular needs. But most still must borrow money from banks in order to finance a college education for their sons or daughters.
Costs, of course, are up. This comes as no great surprise. In fact, while most people loudly protest increases in food prices, taxes and costs of other services, seldom do they oppose increases in the cost of education. Most parents seem to view college costs as an investment. They are investing money in their children's future. It has been definitely established that college graduates earn, on the average, from 1-1/2 to two times as much as non-college grads. Perhaps this is the reason why costs are so infrequently questioned.
Wise members prepare for these expenses by planning for them in advance. I can tell you of a plan specifically designed with college in mind. It enables you to plan, in advance, for your child's college bills. It guarantees that if your child has the desire, the ambition, and the drive, he or she will also have the money. Moreover, it has a feature that no other financial institution can offer. If you die, the money you had planned to save will still be there.
Call me today to discuss these needs.
Fraternally,
Rick Morin, FICF, LUTCF

District Deputy Report
September is here, the children are back in school, the relaxing summer vacations are behind us and we look forward to our Fall Programs. September is the month for Chairmen of the Surge with Service activities to write their reports for the first quarter of this fraternal year. The reporting period for this quarter is from 1 April 2009 through 30 September 2009. This gives our councils six months of events to report on their successes.
District activities for September and October include a first degree scheduled for September 23rd at Fr. Maher Council and October 1st at Our Lady of Guadalupe (tentative), October 6th at Montgomery and a second degree tentatively scheduled for October 17th at Montgomery (Saturday at 2:00 pm). Recruiting new members is a daily activity for all Knights in our District and first degrees are scheduled every month at one of our councils to allow us to bring them in promptly. Be active in recruiting and help our councils grow with new brother Knights that will bring fresh ideas and new programs to our councils.
State activities for October include the Columbus Day Ball on October 10, the Columbus Day festivities at Union Station in D.C. on the 12th. Information on all activities is available through your Grand Knight. We are off to an exciting start in District #30. Our District Warden, Jack Giacalone and Phyllis and Nancy and I are looking forward to another year of activities to expand our councils and provide even more service to our pastors, parishes and communities.
God Bless you and your families.
Vivat Jesus!
John L. Durbin, District Deputy

Halloween Fun for Inwood House Residents
On Saturday, October 24 between 5 and 9 PM our Council will again provide a frighteningly good time to the residents of Inwood House (Silver Spring, MD). 2009 Tootsie Roll Drive Kick-Off
We are about to kick off our 2009 Tootsie Roll Drive! A slight change in the program this year is that it provides support to for people with intellectual disabilities. Plans are underway to canvas local shopkeepers for permission to collect funds and hand out as many tootsie rolls as possible. The candy is here as are the aprons and collection tins. We need every available Knight to take up a post during this season. Call Paul McFarlane on 301-633-9439 to volunteer. This is a wonderful example of how we Knights provide a little effort that results in great gains!
Fr. Peter Paul Maher Golf Outing to Support Seminarians
Father Peter Paul Maher Council will hold its 4th Annual Charity Golf Outing at the Laytonsville Golf Course, on Friday October 16th at 9 AM. All profits from the event will go to our Council’s Seminarian Support Fund, which offers a $500 stipend to as many Seminarians as we can afford to help. The format will be a four-person scramble and the cost is $75 per person of all skill levels. The $75 includes continental breakfast, lunch from Damon’s, a golf cart, beverages, prizes, and a welcome bag! Prizes will be awarded to winning teams and individual's who record the longest drive and closest to the pin.

40 Hours Devotion Adoration Program at St. Patrick’s
Brother Knight, Stephen Monette is about to submit a proposal to Msgr. Hart, the Pastor of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Rockville, to establish the 40 Hours Devotion at St. Patrick’s. The 40 Hours Devotion is a monthly opportunity of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament which, according to the proposal, would be held from 5:00 PM on Thursday evening before every First Friday until the First Saturday 9:00 AM Mass. Per Fr. Rogers’ (assistant to Msgr. Hart) request, the proposal needs to include an ample list of parishioners and other local faithful who express desire to commit ourselves to spend time in adoration should this initiative take hold. You can help by emailing or calling in the names of family and friends who you contact and who express the desire to commit to invest some time, once a month, in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Stephen can be reached at jsmonette@verizon.net and (240)688-6199. Thank you!

News from Supreme
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: HEALTH CARE REFORM MUST EXCLUDE ABORTION COVERAGE
Resolution also calls for protecting religious conscience rights of medical professionals.
Delegates to the 127th annual convention of the Knights of Columbus Aug.6 adopted a resolution declaring opposition to “any health care reform legislation that does not explicitly exclude abortion coverage for any health insurance plan, public or private.” On Tuesday in his annual report to the convention, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson had sounded a similar note, saying, “Health care reform must be abortion free.”
The resolution on Defending the Right to Life also called on “legislators everywhere to adopt legislation protecting the religious conscience rights of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, guaranteeing their right to refuse to participate in abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide or any other practice that is destructive of innocent human life or that conflicts with their sincerely-held religious beliefs.”
The resolution reaffirmed the commitment of the 1.78 million member Knights of Columbus “to unconditional support for the right to life and full protection in law for every human being from conception to natural death.” Finally, the resolution restates the organization’s “long-standing policy of not inviting to any Knights of Columbus event, persons, especially public officials or candidates for public office, who do not support the protection of unborn children against abortion or who advocate the legalization of assisted suicide, euthanasia and other violations of the right to life.
KNIGHTS CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION OF MARRIAGE
Delegates to the 127th annual convention of the Knights of Columbus Aug. 5 adopted a resolution pledging to join with Catholic bishops conferences around the world “in their efforts to achieve legal and constitutional protection at the national, state, territorial or local levels for the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others.”
