Grand Knight's Message
by SK Paul D. McFarlane, Grand Knight
Good Brothers and Gentle Ladies: There’s a saying, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” It refers, I believe, to the weather e.g. as March begins, Winter is still here, but by the 20th Spring unfolds. Allow me to forecast that, in terms of our Council calendar, March comes in like a lion and appears to go out like a dragon! I pray you’re ready for some busy, yet fun-filled events, not the least of which is preparing for Easter by our Lenten devotions. I hope to see you at our Lenten Fish Frys at St. Peters! See flier in this publication.
Men of our Council, please consider attending both the Monday, March 8 and 22 talks entitled, "The Spiritual Battle for Sexual Purity and Catholic Men" to be held at St. John Neumann Church. This is a Lenten series and is touted to be well worth our while. See the article and flier in this publication.
Everyone is asked to consider attending the Maryland State Council’s 128th Founder’s Day Anniversary Mass and Reception on Sunday, March 21st at St. Andrew by the Bay. See flier in this publication. Also, make your reservations ASAP for our Council’s 34th Charter Anniversary Dinner set for Sunday, April 25 at 6:30 PM at New Fortune Restaurant in Gaithersburg, MD. See flier in this publication.
Fraternal Benefits
GOOD ADVICE Remember your teacher’s good advice? Always start each project with on outline. It will give you the right direction. Experience tells us that the same idea works when it comes to getting ahead on the job or in planning for individual or family security. But, in the latter kind of planning, your outline cannot be completed alone.
Rely on the trained advice of your Knights of Columbus Fraternal Benefits Advisor and the Order’s long and practical experience in the life insurance business to help you prepare your plans for the years ahead. I will be happy to help you chart and build a sound economic future. Better yet, I’ll do it with an individual insurance plan keyed to your own needs and goals.
This sort of professional counsel is available at absolutely no obligation just through a telephone call to me for an appointment. Today, when programming is essential to effective use of the do-everything computer, it is equally so to the fulfillment of our own dreams and hopes for our families. Life insurance programming is a service you should have and one that I provide.

Don’t Miss These Lenten Talks For Men
by SK, Paul D. McFarlane
A series of talks entitled, "The Spiritual Battle for Sexual Purity and Catholic Men" is a Lenten event at St. John Neumann Church. It is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council #12127. These are held on Monday March 8th and 22nd, from 8 to 9:30PM in the church. These two talks will focus on the reality of the spiritual warfare that has been raging over God’s gift of sexuality from the beginning. They are designed to provide the truth and meaning of human sexuality and to offer encouragement to all men so they can live in the freedom of Christ every day. In additional to personal observations, the sessions will combine material from Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, other Catholic writers, the Holy Bible, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Presentations will be made by Fr. Thomas LaHood and Tony Castellano. No reservations needed. For information contact Tony at 301-300-0806.
Food for Families Giving Extended into March
by SK, Paul D. McFarlane
The pantry shelves at Olney Help are a bit more full, thanks to your generosity! At our February 3 (Executive) and February 24 (Business) meetings, attendees brought non-perishable (packaged or canned) food items, one (1) for each member of their household. Since we postponed our Business meeting from February 10 to 24, due to the snow, I will place Olney Help boxes at the Lenten Fish Fry events to extend our making these collections. If you come to a Lenten Fish Fry in March, please bring non-perishable (packaged or canned) food items. [They especially need Chicken & Hamburger Helper, Jelly, Peanut Butter, and Muffin Mixes.]
Olney Help is marking its 40th year of providing short-term emergency assistance in the form of food, money, and/or access to resources to residents of Olney, Brookeville, Sandy Spring, and Ashton. By your contributions, our Council has one more way to aid the needy and to participate in the Maryland State Knights of Columbus Food for Families Program. Call me on 301-570-5508 with questions or suggestions related to this cause and accept the heartfelt thanks of our community’s needy for your generosity!
Maryland State Founders Day – 128th Anniversary
Attached to this newsletter is the flyer for the Maryland State Founders Day Mass and reception being held Sunday, March 21, 2010 at St. Andrew by the Bay. Please see the flyer for details and make your reservation no later than March 12, 2010. In addition to celebrating our 128th anniversary, this is the event at which our statewide winners of Family, Citizen, Teacher, Law Enforcement Officer, Firefighter and EMT of the year are announced and honored. The $15 price is right and the award recipients deserve our support and recognition. This year we will be honored to have His Eminence William Cardinal Keeler in attendance.
District Deputy’s Report
by John L. Durbin, District #30
March is when we hold our Spring Membership Blitz. All councils need to put forth an all out effort. I congratulate Our Lady of Guadalupe #12127 for reaching their membership goal set by Supreme. I ask all Knights to offer every man not already a Knight the opportunity to join your council. Many of you find it hard to approach a man at church or a social function and ask him to become a Knight, but if you do not you may be denying him the opportunity. Many of our members, when asked why they did not join us earlier respond, “No one asked me.” They may say ‘no’ or may not be interested at this time, but please ask them. You have at least given them the chance. Do not take it personally if they say no, you have planted the seed and they may eventually decide to say yes. Membership is up to all of us not just your membership chairman.
1. Haiti Earthquake Relief
All of us have been given the opportunity to contribute to those in need by our parishes, councils and other agencies. The Supreme Council sent an initial contribution of $50,000 to Catholic Relief Services for immediate humanitarian needs and other state and local councils contributed $144,000 to the relief effort. If you wish to make a contribution through the Maryland State Council either as a council, assembly or personally you can make out a tax deductible check to the Knights of Columbus Charities Inc with “Haiti Earthquake Relief” on the memo line and give it to any one of the State Officers or mail it to: State Secretary Peter Davio, 23004 Timber Creek Lane, Clarksburg, MD 20871
2. Maryland March for Life – March 8th
The Maryland Candlelight March for Life will be on March 8, 2010 in Annapolis. Mass will be at 5:30 PM at St Mary’s Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, celebrant will be Baltimore Archbishop O’Brien. The March will begin at 6:40 PM. The Knights are relied on heavily for both financial and physical support. All Councils are asked to make monetary donations to offset the cost of the march. The Maryland State Council will match $0.50 for each dollar contributed up to $50 that each council donates to the march. Donations payable to the ‘Maryland March for Life’. Send to Pro-Life Chairman John Eure, 10225 Frederick Ave. #208, Kensington, MD 20895.
