Grand Knight's Message
by SK Paul D. McFarlane, Grand Knight
Good Brothers and Gentle Ladies: Thanks to many of you and of course to our St. Peter's parishioners, our Lenten Fish Fries were a great success! We built much goodwill and made our presence and a bit of our worth known during these events.
April 17 Deadline! Call Homer Chen or me to make a reservation for our Council's 34 Anniversary Charter Dinner on Sunday, April 24 at 6:30 PM at the New Fortune Restaurant in Gaithersburg, MD. See details in the flier in this publication!
He is risen! Sunday, April 4 is one of the holiest days on our calendars. As Catholics, we've prepared for Easter by praying, fasting, and sacrificing. We do these things to seek our Heavenly Father's will as He made His word, flesh. Through His Son, our Savior, our future is certain; our faith will be rewarded. My family offers prayers of His grace, peace, and love to you and yours!
Fraternal Benefits
Money Back Term Insurance
Sound too good to be true? If it does, it usually is not true.
Many people buy term insurance because it is considered cheap insurance. Unfortunately, when the term runs out, the member continues to need the protection. Now the member is forced to qualify and, if he can, usually pays a higher premium.
Term insurance has its place. It may be used to protect someone for a specific need or for a specific time period. It may be used to provide large amounts of insurance protection when there is a need to divert premiums to everyday living needs.
Unfortunately, it may be the most expensive when the member lives beyond the term period and asks . . . "What is my policy worth?"
A policy should provide the amount of protection that is needed for a specific time. Then the cash values in the policy may be used for other purposes, such as, education funds, retirement income, prepay other obligations or used in the event of an emergency.
"Money Back Term" is a misnomer. However, your life policy can work just like it. Call your Brother Knight and council's field agent today to ask about evaluating your life insurance portfolio.

Knights Of Columbus Wins Pledge Of Allegiance Case In Federal Appeals Court
On Thursday, March 11, 2010, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (San Francisco, CA) ruled that the words "one nation under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance "do not violate the Establishment Clause" of the First Amendment to the Constitution."
The Knights of Columbus led the campaign to add the words "under God" to the Pledge in the early 1950s, and the trial court agreed to allow the Knights of Columbus to join the present case as defendants when it was originally filed in 2005.
"This decision is a victory for common sense," Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said. "It is also a welcome reversal of the Ninth Circuit's 2002 decision in a similar case that was ultimately thrown out by the Supreme Court on technical grounds. Today, the Court got it absolutely right: recitation of the Pledge is a patriotic exercise, not a religious prayer. Best of all, the Court said that the words 'under God' add a 'note of importance which a Pledge to our Nation ought to have and which in our culture ceremonial references to God arouse.' Every reasonable person knows that, and today's decision is a breath of fresh air from a court system that has too often seemed to be almost allergic to public references to God. This is a very good day for America," Anderson concluded.
In today's ruling, the Court noted that, "Among the 'self-evident truths' the Framers believed was the concept that all people are entitled to certain inalienable rights given to them by the 'Laws of Nature and Nature's God' and that the purpose of government should be to "secure those rights.'" Such beliefs provide the context in which the words of the Pledge must be understood, the Court said.
The Knights of Columbus and several individual Knights and their families were defendant-interveners in the case, and the court's 2-1 decision incorporates many of the arguments presented to the Court by The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty a public interest law firm that represented the Knights in the case. Oral arguments before the Ninth Circuit panel had been heard in December 2007. Other defendants in the case included the United States government and a Sacramento-area school district.
June Golf Outing Supports Our Seminarians
by Jack Giacalone, DW, FN, PGK
Father Peter Paul Maher Council will hold its 4th annual Charity Golf Outing at Laytonsville golf course on Friday, June 11th at 9 AM. All profits from the event will go to the council's Seminarian Support Fund, which offers a $500 stipend to as many Seminarians as we can afford to help. In 2009 we supported 9 seminarians; we hope to equal that in 2010! The format would be a four-person scramble and the cost is $75 per person of all skill levels. The $75 includes continental breakfast, lunch from Damon's, golf cart, beverages, prizes, a welcome bag and lots more!
Key to the success of this Golf Outing is to have at least one sponsor for each hole. Sponsorships are $100 per hole and can be business or individual sponsors. (Also, 4 individual sponsors @$25 each will sponsor a hole.) Each sponsor will have their company name or individual name/s prominently displayed at each hole they sponsor. Please contact Marc Long for any questions, to reserve your tee time, to sponsor a hole or to make a donation. You can contact Mark at 301-208-7134 or 301-518-1040 or ramair320_129@msn.com. You can also visit our web site at www.kofc6793.org to print out a sign-up form. Please help us achieve our goal!

District Deputy Report
by John L. Durbin
April is here! Our Spring Membership Blitz is underway and we now look forward to welcoming our new brothers into our Councils and the Order. Grand Knights, Membership Directors and Brother Knights should encourage all new members to take advantage of the Fraternal Benefits offered by the Order. That is Father McGivney's dream that all families be provided for in the event of loss of income by either/or both parents. Providing income for those we leave behind is a SELFLESS act of love that provides us with peace of mind and at the same time allows our Order to provide marvelous benefits to our Church, Holy Father and to many other activities around the world, some of which are catastrophic. All of us should do our part. Become an Insurance Member of the Order.
If we need to schedule more first degrees in the District let me know so they can be set up for the convenience of everyone. We are now in the final three months of this fraternal year and all councils in the District with the exception of Our Lady of Guadalupe are far from the goals set at the beginning of the year. Do not be discouraged! There is still time to add to our number and make our councils grow. Please continue with the outstanding "Surge with Service" programs you have planned. The reports for this fraternal year ended April 1, 2010 but the activities from April 1 through June 30 may be reported by the next Grand Knight and his officers.
On behalf of Nancy, Jill and Jack and Phyllis, I wish all of you and your families a very Blessed and Happy Easter from the District staff. May God Bless our work!
