Grand Knight's Message
by SK Paul D. McFarlane, Grand Knight
Good Brothers and Gentle Ladies: Each of you who participated in any of our Council events this fraternal year shares the accolades showered on Council #6793 at the 112th Maryland State Convention on Saturday, May 15, 2010! Our combined time, talents, energies, and creativity garnered no fewer than nine awards, which I was proud to accept on your behalf! Convention photos will be posted to our website ASAP! Also, see the "Awards" article in this issue.
Time well spent - That's what I can attest to as I write this, my final message as your Grand Knight. Many of my predecessors counseled that I would know far more about what it meant to serve in this post upon the completion of this fraternal year. They were so right! I also have a greater appreciation for the importance of planning ahead and reaching out to "you" my Brother Knights and families to gain the wisdom of your input. My sincere thanks also go to Rev. Father John Nguyen, Chaplain, Rev. Deacon Thomas Cioffi, Associate Chaplain, Rev. Father Thomas Kalita and Rev. Msgr. Kevin Hart for their counsel, guidance, and support throughout this fraternal year. We look forward to continuing our Council's proud traditions and to new projects we will enjoy accomplishing together. Vivat Jesus!
District Deputy's Report
by John L. Durbin, District Deputy
Here we are, nearly at the end of this fraternal year and looking forward to the new one beginning in July. There is still time to bring in those last few members that you need to hit your goal. District Warden Jack Giacalone and Phyllis join us in thanking everyone for two great years of service to our parishes, priests and the Knights of Columbus.
We wish all of you continued success as we move forward and continue to build our councils and our Order. A very, very special thank you goes to all wives for their support and help with everything that happens in the District. We Need You!
God bless all of you and thank you for a memorable (2) years.
John, Nancy and Jill
District Deputy #30

Your Financial Secretary Needs Your Help!
The council needs your help on two very important items:
(1) Your 2010 membership card was generated by a new database maintained at the Supreme Council. We have been notified by Supreme that the Degree designation shown on the card may not be correct. WE NEED ALL MEMBERS TO CHECK THEIR 2010 MEMBERSHIP CARD (now) to see if their degree designation is correct. Please compare it to your (old) 2009 membership card. Call me or write me an email (preferred) to let me know if a change is required. If you have previously done this, I thank you.
(2) On a related matter, THE COUNCIL NEEDS YOU TO PROVIDE YOUR CURRENT EMAIL ADDRESS TO THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY. This will help us communicate with you on important council activities and administrative items. We currently have 150 email addresses from our 385 total council members. The council now has the ability to send email to all members through the Supreme database. WE NEED EVERYONE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS EFFORT, even council members who have previously provided us with their email address. Please send an email (preferred) with your email update to the Financial Secretary, Donald Hemke. (see below)
Your current address and phone number update would also be most helpful. We recognize not all members have access to email, so please contact the Financial Secretary by phone to let him know your situation.
We need every council member to participate, because we certainly want to be confident our council database is accurate. Thanks in advance.

A Message to Our Membership
by Reverend Father John T. Nguyen, Council Chaplain
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we are almost through this fraternal year and preparing for the years ahead, as your Chaplain, I am so proud and graceful for all the things that you do. I pray and hope that God will continue to shower down his grace upon each one of you and send into your heart his great love so that each of you may always lives and walks in His present.
As we continue "The Year of The Priest," Let us ask the Lord Jesus Christ, our High Priest, to bless us and to give us His wisdom and love. And in respond to Christ's love toward each one of us, let us committed ourselves to the work that we do and be faithful to what we believe. Let us dedicate our life to serve God and others by willing to observe the Words of God and put them into action. These are the words of God that I use to remind myself:
If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests,… (1Cor. 13:1-5)
Finally, my mentor once told me that "when we take the time to quietly reflected on our works, we sometimes experience special grace." since we are about to end this fraternal year, I invite all of us to take advantage of these times that God gives us and quietly reflect upon God's words and the works that we had done in the past and then formulate some concrete plan for the upcoming years. May almighty God bless us the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Scholarship Award - A First!
On Thursday, April 29, 2010, at 7:30PM, Grand Knight McFarlane and Jack Giacalone, DW were honored to attend the Junior Scholarship program at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School to present a $1,000 scholarship and certificate, in the name of Ms. Savannah Godbey on behalf of Fr. Peter Paul Maher Council. This was the first time we have done this and plan to do so for the next several years. The scholarship recognizes a deserving junior student, rising to senior and aides the candidate in covering the cost of Catholic High School tuition. We received a welcome recognition from the OLGC student body. Thanks go to Brother Giacalone and Arthur Ramos of OLGC for arranging this scholarship. Ms. Godbey, a stellar scholar, was extremely grateful!
June Golf Outing Benefits Our Seminarians
by Jack Giacalone, DW, FN, PGK
Father Peter Paul Maher Council will hold its 4th Annual Charity Golf Outing at Laytonsville golf course on Friday, June 11th at 9 AM. All profits from the event will go to the council's Seminarian Support Fund, which offers a $500 stipend to as many Seminarians as we can afford to help. In 2009 we supported 9 seminarians; we hope to equal that in 2010! The format would be a four-person scramble and the cost is $75 per person of all skill levels. The $75 includes continental breakfast, lunch from Damon's, golf cart, beverages, prizes, a welcome bag and lots more!
Key to the success of this Golf Outing is to have at least one sponsor for each hole. Sponsorships are $100 per hole and can be business or individual sponsors. (Also, 4 individual sponsors @$25 each will sponsor a hole.) Each sponsor will have their company name or individual name/s prominently displayed at each hole they sponsor. Please contact Marc Long for any questions, to reserve your tee time, to sponsor a hole or to make a donation. You can contact Mark at 301-208-7134 or 301-518-1040 or ramair320_129@msn.com. You can also visit our web site at www.kofc6793.org/golf/index.php?align_header=left to print out a sign-up form. Please help us achieve our goal!

Supreme Announces - Knights Of Columbus Membership Tops 1.8 Million
The Knights of Columbus passed a significant milestone on April 30, 2010, when its membership exceeded 1.8 million. At the end of the last day of April 2010, the official tally of Knights of Columbus around the world stood at 1,800,445.
"Achieving this milestone in membership is a testament to the high regard in which the Knights of Columbus is held among Catholic men everywhere," Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said. "We offer a unique opportunity to serve our church and our communities as one of the most active service organizations anywhere in the world. We truly offer the 'experience of a lifetime,' to join brother Knights in a common effort to become better fathers, better husbands, better citizens and better Catholics, together with the opportunity to provide financial protection for their families."
Membership in the Knights of Columbus grew from 1.7 to 1.8 million in less than five years (59 months), and continues a growth trend in which the number of Knights has grown every year since 1973. The United States jurisdictions adding the largest number of new members were Texas, California, Florida, Michigan and Illinois, accounting for 15,506 new members since the beginning of the current fraternal year on July 1, 2009. In Canada, jurisdictions in Quebec and Ontario recruited 4,640 new members. In the Philippines, Luzon led all jurisdictions with 7,669 new members recruited, fully one-half of all new members recruited there. In Mexico, the Mexico South jurisdiction recruited 515 new members, more than one-third of all new members recruited there. The Order's newest jurisdiction, Poland, also grew briskly, recruiting 291 new members and increasing its membership by more than one-third in less than a year. The Dominican Republic added 221 new members. Over the past 10 months, the Knights of Columbus recruited 70,310 new members worldwide. Councils have two more months to recruit new members before the end of the fraternal year on June 30. A final tally of Knights of Columbus membership for the 2009-2010 fraternal year will be announced in July. The number of new members recruited will be offset by deaths and withdrawals, and thus net growth in membership will be slightly lower.
