Grand Knight's Message
by Joseph F. Krempasky, Grand Knight
Well, the elections have been held, Paul McFarlane is lessening his load, and a new slate of officers is ready for installation. Much is on the agenda for the next few months, but, before I say anything about the calendar for the new Fraternal Year, please welcome Reverend Fr. Joseph Rogers as our new Chaplain! As many of you know, Father Rogers is a Pastor at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and we are very pleased that he is willing to become part of our fine organization.
Now the calendar – I still need to make some adjustments to the schedules, and am attempting to firm up details for the Installation of Officers on Saturday, August 14 after the 5PM Mass at St. Peter’s Chapel inside the main Church. A reception follows in the parish hall. We are fortunate to again be part of the Silver Rose program, honoring our Blessed Mother. A special service is scheduled for Wednesday, August 4, 2010 to be held from 7:30 – 8:30 pm at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. (Therefore, there will be NO Executive Meeting that evening.) Hopefully, I will be able to share more next month.

| Council 6793 | Joseph F. Krempasky | Fr. Peter Paul Maher |
| Council 12127 | Ronald J. Bauer | Our Lady of Guadalupe |

I am honored to have been selected by the State Deputy elect, Peter Davio, to help guide and advise our council officers in the coming year. I know we will work together as a Team and achieve all of our objectives and meet our challenges. The Installation schedule is posted to the district web site www.kofcd30.org. Access this web site frequently for updated information for district and council activities. I encourage you and your spouse to attend your council’s installation to show your support for the incoming officers.
The State Deputy’s motto for his administration is “Fac, Nos, Semper, Scire” or “Make Us Always Aware.” Taken from “Our Lady Queen of the Knights” prayer we should recite at the closing of all our meetings. We should be aware of who we are as Knights, what we represent and what we need to achieve.
The District 30 Officers for the year are:
District Deputy Jack Giacalone and Phyllis (6793)
District Warden Tom Firestone and Susan (12127)
Tom, Susan, Phyllis and I are looking forward to working with our councils and to assist them in any way we can; all you need to do is call. May God bless you and your families and God Bless America!

Council Brother To Be Ordained July 10, 2010
Brother Donald Hemke, Financial Secretary, recently corresponded with Reverend Deacon James A. McCormack, MIC who resides in Washington DC. Deacon McCormack, who has been a member of Peter Paul Maher Council since February 2006, informed Brother Hemke that he will be ordained in his home parish of St. Patrick’s in Burlington, CT at 1:30 PM on Saturday, July 10, 2010! Deacon McCormack will then celebrate his first Mass on Sunday, July 11 at 10:30 AM at the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA. Deacon Jim, as many of his closest friends call him, signs his e-mails with the saying, “Vince malum in bono” which means, “Overcome evil with good!” Please keep Deacon Jim and his family in your prayers.
Maryland Food For Families Participation – A Success!
Vince Grauso, FDD, PGK, PFN, who served as the Maryland State Council Food for Families Chairman, recently reported the results of the Food for Families program by stating, “Thank you to all the councils that participated to make this program a success! Please continue to support your local food banks and soup kitchens. We will also continue to have periodic bread donations from Bakery de France. Supreme Council participation levels have been determined and the following checks will be distributed to the Archbishop or Bishop for donation to their food banks or soup kitchens…”
» Archdiocese of Baltimore: $14,707 » Archdiocese of Washington: $16,469 » Diocese of Wilmington: $6,532
This program was initiated by Knights of Columbus Supreme Council as part of the Neighbors Helping Neighbors project. A total of $1 million was set aside for jurisdictions where at least 25% of its councils participated during the months of November through December 2009 and January through February 2010.
Our Council participated during these months in addition to our monetary donations to So Others Might Eat (SOME) through both St. Patrick’s and St. Peter’s parishes and participation in serving meals and bagging groceries during the holiday months, etc. We did so by placing boxes at our February and March 2010 Lenten Fish Fry events for collections by our fellow St. Peter’s parishioners! Therefore, in addition to the funds provided by Supreme above, we collected approximately 10 copier-paper sized boxes of nonperishable food items to Olney Help. Thanks again for all your support!

The City Of Rome Celebrates The Knights Of Columbus
FROM SUPREME K of C NEWS RELEASE -JUNE 9, 2010
Pope Pius XII meets the crowds after Rome's San Lorenzo district is struck by allied bombs - Rome, Italy - 1943

The Mayor of Rome, the Vatican Secretary of State and the Supreme Knight all gathered at Rome's Capitoline Museum today for the opening of a special exhibit that tells the story of nearly a century of friendship between the Eternal City and the Knights of Columbus.
The American organization -also the largest Catholic Fraternal group in the world -is best known to most Romans for the sports fields it operates around the city. But there is much more to the history than that, and the amazing tale of the Knights of Columbus’ facilitation of a friendship that transcended the Atlantic Ocean will be the subject of Everybody Welcome, Everything Free: The Knights of Columbus and Rome, Celebrating 90 Years of Friendship. The exhibit will run from June 9 -October 31, 2010 at the Musei Capitolini at the Campidoglio.
“The story of the Knights of Columbus in Rome is a story of the power of faith and friendship that can overcome any adversity and bring two worlds together for the good of both,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Invited by Pope Benedict XV to establish an enduring presence in the city in 1920, we are pleased that for 90 years, despite a turbulent 20th century, the Knights have become an established fixture in the eternal city, and continue to be at the service of the people Rome and of the Holy See during the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI.”
The exhibit will feature the Knights’ role in constructing and operating playgrounds for the city’s children, as well as the role the Knights have played in Vatican restoration and communication projects, and the role the Knights assumed as a quiet diplomatic channel between the United States and the Vatican -prior to the formal diplomatic recognition of the Vatican by United States in the 1980s. The Knights run five playgrounds in the city, and has assisted with some of the Vatican’s most important restorations including restoration of the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica, its Maderno Atrium, the dome of its Blessed Sacrament chapel, its grottos, its statues of Sts. Peter and Paul, as well as many other projects. In addition, since the mid-1970s, the Knights have funded the satellite costs for various papal ceremonies -including the annual Christmas liturgy with the pope.
Though not widely known, the Knights served as an unofficial diplomatic channel between the United States and the Holy See during the time when those two states did not have diplomatic relations. It was Count Enrico Galeazzi, the Knights’ director in Rome, who was sent by Pope Pius XII to the United States to seek from President Roosevelt a cessation of bombing in Rome in 1943 after Allied planes bombed the city. And the foundation for Vatican diplomatic relations with the United States was laid almost 60 years later, in 1982, at the organization’s international convention. There, Cardinal Agostino Casarolli met with President Ronald Reagan and the two laid the groundwork for full diplomatic ties. But perhaps most incredible of all, the Knights continued to operate their Roman playgrounds even after the outbreak of World War II in which the United States and Italy were belligerents, and at a time when the fascist government had abolished Catholic youth activities.
After the war, the Knights played an important role in relief efforts for Italy and the Italian people, and remain in Rome to this day, a symbol of a bond faith and friendship that could not be broken by distance, language, or even World War. The Knights first came to Rome in 1918 establishing a service center for American troops stationed there in World War I. They established a long-term presence in 1920 at the behest of Pope Benedict XV, and have remained active in the city ever since.
